Maybe the leaf spring that holds the fram filter together couldn't handle the weight of the wire backing. So they removed it.

...Maybe they took the metal screen backing out , so the anti drain back valve won't get sucked up into the engine LoL

These so called leaf springs really don't have much flex to them like a coil springs do. If you flex them to much they they just bend, and lose the internal tension that holds the filter together. Coil springs are the superior design in my opinion

In my opinion a filter with a proper coil spring, and adbv with a groove in it that the base plate pushes into is a lot less likely to have this problem.

Did this have a coil spring or one of them stamped steel pieces

Looked at a few of these filters at wally world today... Looks like a pretty good filter. I would have liked it better if they'd use a coil spring instead of the stamped steel spring.
