Some automotive OEMs claim that burning 1 quart per thousand miles is normal so I don't think you are in trouble with less the 0.5qt/1k miles. Something worth considering though is that this vehicle has nearly 270k on the clock. There is a mindset that goes along the line that you've been doing...

Yes they take filters too. Never tried to give them one that was cut open but they'd likely accept it if it isn't mangled. And they might even accept mangled..... who knows?!? Best to go in and ask but I'll leave that homework to you.
