    2005 Yukon XL

My trailer is 21ft, no more than 5500lbs, loaded. I know how modern smallblocks tow- (making power with RPM), the 250 does the same thing. I just pull 55-60mph and lock out O/D. I typically get much better mileage than most when pulling just by doing that. My old F150 needed helper springs in...

    2005 Yukon XL

All, I am thinking of selling my F250 and getting into a 2005 Yukon XL 4wd. Tow package, 5.3, 3.42 gears, locking axle, 112k on it, single owner texas truck, fairly loaded, Bose, leather, etc. This would enable the family to go camping in only one vehicle (4 kids), still have a 4wd for hunting...

Things you carry with you every day?

Folding knife. Phone. Keys. One of these three- Ruger LC9. Ruger SR9C. or Ruger GP100. If I am in a rush, there is a Ruger P90 in the truck with one spare loaded mag, one empty mag, and about 75 rounds. Each vehicle has body armor, a few MREs and other essentials.

Oil grade Ford 5.4 3V- I was wrong

I agree- noise versus actual issue- however, I think we can agree neither the phasers, the chains, guides or exhaust manifolds were designed to make these kinds of noises, because again, I have driven many 3V 5.4s that did not make noise. -What evidence is there that thicker oil does not result...

Oil grade Ford 5.4 3V- I was wrong

I hear you, but oil filters have super small oil passages as well, and they manage to get oil through them. Its only a 10w at startup, and I imagine a 40 weight at 100C is still thinner than a 10w at startup. If it makes different crazy noises, I will drop to a 5w-30 or 10w30 HDEO. I already...

2WD w/posi vs 4WD with open diffs in snow

I can answer this one with one truck. I have an F250 with a posi. Without the 4WD engaged, it gets stuck or spins. With the 4WD, it goes pretty much anywhere. Two pushing does not equal one pulling and one pushing.

Oil grade Ford 5.4 3V- I was wrong

I unplugged both VCT solenoids, no change to noises. At this point I am thinking phasers, tensioners/chain noise, or outside chance exhaust. I am going to do the fogging idea and put the exhaust thing to bed once and for all. If the 10w40 makes the noise go away I am going to consider it good...

Oil grade Ford 5.4 3V- I was wrong

Well, after being a thin oil advocate forever, and sticking by 5w-20 for the 3V 5.4 in my F250, I now believe that 5w-20 is not ideal for my engine. I understand these engines to be very "tolerance" dependent, and some engines have different bad or stacked tolerances that produce different...

    Mobil 1 15/w50 in Ford 4.6 V8 12,706 Mile OCI

Old thread, but.....I will say this- the non-PI 4.6 crown vics got over 200K easy in police service. Some agencies used 15w-40 in them. I drove them with 15w-40 and with 5w-30, and they ran better with 5w-30. It is nonsensical to say there is no performance advantage to lighter oil. The oil is...
