    Pennzoil - Low-speed pre-ignition (LSPI) Q&A

Is LSPI a phenomenon that has only been observed in direct-injection gasoline engines? It seems the finer, higher-pressure mist when combined with the added heat of adiabatic compression from forced induction would be conducive to rogue ignition events.

PUP's fall from grace over the last 10 years?

I don’t have any need to. I’ve used GTL, PAO, POE, and all the rest. I went nearly 10% of your Sienna’s total mileage on a single OCI of PUP in an N/A engine that’s extremely easy on oil, and then I went basically the exact same mileage on a twin-turbo, 30% ethanol mix making over 300% more...

PUP's fall from grace over the last 10 years?

Don’t forget to mention that an oil’s evaporation rate is not just measured on the base oil, and certainly not just the heaviest base oil at that. The additive pack also has an evaporation rate that must be accounted for, because my tests with HPL shows a decent portion of them end up in the PCV...

PUP's fall from grace over the last 10 years?

Actually, depending on the number of times Glenda used PUP, the info may be correct. The first time I used PUP in three different vehicles, some oil disappeared, roughly 1/2-3/4 quart. Subsequent runs didn’t use any oil in two of the vehicles, and about half a quart in the 3rd. I’ve got over...

24’ KTM 790 ADV Valve and Cam Inspection

300* Below. As far as the coatings go, there’s nearly thousands. Many have good DLC or dry film lubricants available.

    The Valve Experiment

Are there any gasoline manufacturers adding oil to their fuels? Seems if there were measurable benefits they’d be lobbying EPA to make it legal so they could charge more for gasoline. IMO, if your fuel needs oil in it to work well, you should buy better fuel.

BYD is Chinese. H/K is obviously Korean. The rest are European. 👍🏻

To blend or not to blend is the question (HPL and Renewable Lubricants)?

As much as I love @High Performance Lubricants and bi-monthly buy every product I can swing from them, buying even the very best oil is never able to be considered an investment. At best, it is a cost avoidance, which isn’t really a net positive on the books but it can reduce operating losses.

Modern Automatics, Low RPM, and Engine Longevity

An old car with manual transmission has almost zero in common with a current automatic. Your Dodge is a 3-leaf clover; typical and everywhere. If your Mazda wasn’t happy, it would drop multiple gears or pull timing. The End.

Modern Automatics, Low RPM, and Engine Longevity

You’re pursuing all the boogeymen rather than facts. The engine programming is going to avoid nearly 100% of the fearmongering points you repeated. Nothing against you personally, but I wouldn’t waste one moment worrying about 99% of what you posted. Buy a good oil. Change it at a reasonable...

24’ KTM 790 ADV Valve and Cam Inspection

If I bought a 790 (or any KTM rn TBH) I would disassemble the bike before I ever rode it a single mile and send the cams to 300* Below for their cryogenic treatment. Then, after cryo treatment, they would receive a nickel-boron or DLC treatment to keep a very slippery surface available with...

    VRP

If you’re impressed, use it. Most of the measurements you’re claiming are unable to be verified via documented equipment like SPL meters and UOAs; so if you’re happy and your engine is running well, carry on. But fuel mileage and noise are not two things that can be quantified to distinguish...

2015 Porsche Boxster 2.7L, Unknown Oil or OCI

Past history before your ownership doesn’t mean squat. They didn’t drive like you. Do in-service sample at 5k and change immediately when results come in if they’re negative. If neutral, shoot 7.5k or 10k. Continue til oil is 1 grade lower or 2 grades higher.

    Particle Analysis (ATF)

I’d use WearCheck in NC. HPL trusts them as their third party analysis; if you’ve seen HPL’s lab, and HPL trusts WearCheck NC… IMO it’s a place you can trust to deliver the most exacting results available. Buyer beware, however, with some other labs mentioned here…

Pluto, at the Edge of the Solar System

Don’t forget the operational delay of 2+ hours at Hartsfield. The last time I flew thru there, my connection didn’t happen and I was forced to sleep on a bench in the terminal… no hotel room offered. Equals- instant lifetime avoidance of any flight thru ATL Screw me once…

    Not another Valvoline R&P thread

At 5k OCI, buy the top shelf at WM and carry on. Oil isn’t going to be the limiting factor even with a terrible engine design under those conditions.

I’m probably unfortunately never going to get to travel to our facility in Fairfield again, but if I manage it, I’m definitely gonna PM you to see if we can meet up for dinner. I’m all in for constructive, passionate discussions about various topics… like I’m sure would have occurred when I...

    Valvoline synthetic 5w-30 VOA

I don’t know the details, maybe @RDY4WAR can chime in… not even HPL’s true Euro oils use moly. Something about the chemistry must not play nice; they usually have higher boron and low-to-zero moly.

    Daughter thinking about a WRX

The 22+ rear end screams Honda Civic to me, unfortunately. I much prefer the 2006-2007 body style that @skyactiv had like I do (although mine isn’t a WRX). It had great proportions, fender flares similar to the 80’s Capri, and has a fantastic feel ripping down dirt roads even with a 4EAT. So...
