    New Mobil 1 FS 0w-40

I like the statement on the back "recommended for VW 503.01", which has been superseded ever since VW 504/507 came out probably 8 years ago. It was Audi's spec for extended drains in high horsepower turbo equipped motors. The 503.01 was full saps, whereas the newer VW 504 is mid or low saps, and...

    Porsche A40 Testing Protocol

I bet Porsche doesn't publish the test criteria so rouge oil companies can't claim they meet or exceed the specs, which helps the companies that get the approval.

    Castrol 0w40 Woopla

In my VW, when revving the motor up to higher rpm's, it doesn't seem as loud and just seems smoother with the Castrol. Also, it doesn't drink the Castrol as fast as the M1.

HTHSv and xw30 vs xw40 choice

But wouldn't it be safe to assume that the HTHS test criteria is based on the harshest expected conditions? IE, high speed/high load? Maybe it doesn't get that hot or sheer that bad when cruising at 40 mph under light throttle... If that's the case, the 40w should offer a little more protection...

HTHSv and xw30 vs xw40 choice

The oil may get to that temp while inside a bearing or turbo, but it's not that high when it enters. A 40w is going to be thicker when it enters, so for however long it's in a bearing, it's average viscosity will be higher.

HTHSv and xw30 vs xw40 choice

I think what's missing here is the realization that oils in an engine are rarely going to get to 150c where the HTHS spec is measured, where a 30w and 40w with the same HTHS would have equal viscosity. If the oil stays closer to 100c most of the time, the 40w is going to be thicker than the 30w...

The 0w-30 is now made in Belgium. The 0w-40 is made in Germany. Both now contain titanium. The best deal is the 5 quart jugs of 40w at WalMart for $21.

    Oil for Audi A4 3.0

503.01 was replaced by 504. It was a long life high horsepower variable service oil (30,000km or 2 years). http://www.oilspecifications.org/volkswagen.php
