    Mobil 1 FS 0w40, RAM 1500 5.7L HEMI 6000 mi, high FE

Here’s some lifter pics. You can clearly see the material transfer from the cam.

    Mobil 1 FS 0w40, RAM 1500 5.7L HEMI 6000 mi, high FE

Well, we have our answers. Tore the engine down. All lifters looked good, with the exception of cam material transfer. The cam looked awful. Multiple lobes had the first hardness layer worn off with pitting. This is where the fe and shavings were coming from. The cam phaser didn’t look too hot...

    Mobil 1 FS 0w40, RAM 1500 5.7L HEMI 6000 mi, high FE

That’s the thing that’s troubling me. It still sounds fine and runs fine other than the cold noise described above… I guess it could just starting to be wearing into the lobe. Have the pass side valve cover off right now and looking to see if any of the pushrods move less than the others.

    Mobil 1 FS 0w40, RAM 1500 5.7L HEMI 6000 mi, high FE

All was ferrous. No copper, no brass, no AL. I'll get more pics of what was in the bottom of the can. (Still have it.) Most was fine particles and black debris, likely carbon. The bottom pic of the oil was taken from the bottom of the can, you can see the brownish black specs from that...

    Mobil 1 FS 0w40, RAM 1500 5.7L HEMI 6000 mi, high FE

Latest UOA at 1.5k with valvoline EPHM 0w20 below. Cut the filter open per @OVERKILL , it wasn't awful, but there was quite a bit of metal present in the pleats, and even more in the oil remaining in the bottom of the filter. There was a lot of carbon and other debris present as well. All these...

    Mobil 1 FS 0w40, RAM 1500 5.7L HEMI 6000 mi, high FE

Yeah, not at all the same noise, Has to be valvetrain clatter then.. I'll cut the filter open next OCI. It'll be soon.

    Mobil 1 FS 0w40, RAM 1500 5.7L HEMI 6000 mi, high FE

This is the noise in question, , Seen plenty say its piston slap, and it's done this since new on certain oils when cold, more pronounced in gear under load. Could be valvetrain noise, who knows. Was the worst on redline 5w20, drained it after a day, that was 70k ago or so. Non existent on...

    Mobil 1 FS 0w40, RAM 1500 5.7L HEMI 6000 mi, high FE

I see your point. It's more of thinking ahead, UOAs can catch issues before they present, and I think that's what the case is here. Either way, this level of wear is not normal, and there is an issue somewhere, unless its somehow some form of leaching from deposits which is very very unlikely...

    Mobil 1 FS 0w40, RAM 1500 5.7L HEMI 6000 mi, high FE

This interval was also M1 0w40.... with added mos2 I drained the valvoline after 1000 miles as a "wash out"

    Mobil 1 FS 0w40, RAM 1500 5.7L HEMI 6000 mi, high FE

I really, really, really doubt it has anything to do with the oil, but we'll see. The only oil related hypothesis I could see is, some of these hemi's have some piston slap on PAOs and Ester oils,, Maybe the wear is coming from that... We will really won't know until its torn down I think.

Sigh... i didn't.. again. Next interval I will, and also will be dropping the pan too to see how much metal is down there.

    Mobil 1 FS 0w40, RAM 1500 5.7L HEMI 6000 mi, high FE

My thought exactly. It has cold lifter tick , but it always has made a little tick until it warmed up, back even when iron was 11 ppm. Otherwise it really doensn't sound/run different. Oil pressure is exactly the same as when it was new. I do have a new transmission w/ an edge 3000 stall...

    Mobil 1 FS 0w40, RAM 1500 5.7L HEMI 6000 mi, high FE

Here's another short UOA on this engine on the M1, prior to this was a very short run of valvoline, so the excess from the original high fe interval should be washed out. Something is definitely wearing out here, Plan is to do one more UOA, this time on valvoline, then tear into it. This sample...

New Valvoline Extended Protection High Mileage 0w20, VOA

Yeah that’s what I meant as well, the HM uses GTL when the regular EP does not according to the SDS

New Valvoline Extended Protection High Mileage 0w20, VOA

The extended protection uses a GTL base per the sds too vs the regular just being a hydrocracked grp III

    2013 Ram 1500 5.7 Hemi / 4,500 miles / RP HPS 5w20

My idle oil pressure is usually 47 or so at 215* on 5w20 or 0w20, and I have 150k on mine. 30 sounds a bit low, these engines have tri layered bearings which have copper so that could be a source. Any UOAs since?

    Valvoline EP High Mileage

Saw this thread the other day, had a dream that it had 566ppm of moly 🤣 Got a qt of 0w20 and 5w30 at Walmart. Sending both out for VOAs at oil analyzers. It’s primarily GTL based based on the SDS, when both regular EP and Advanced is just a hydrocracked grp 3 based on the SDS. Will post the...
