EV charging example costs more than it would to fill up a premium fuel car

I don't mean to be critical but I do believe that you California folks should have a critical look at the realities of time of use metering. Unlike where I live your grid scale utility costs are higher at night. See https://www.gridstatus.io/live/caiso This may or may not reflect the way you...

    Post your latest oil change

In my case the oil was dark already so I ,ay or may not notice any change. The extended plan is to run the EC30 for the next four weeks or 1000 miles before replacing with HPL Premium Plus 0w-30. This vehicle is parked outdoors and departs for work at 5:30 AM when it can be rather chilly over...

    Post your latest oil change

Not exactly an oil change, but... Out: 1 quart 5w-30 M1 EP roughly 5500 miles In: 1 quart HPL EC30 The Fram TG 7317 wasn't installed today. The plan is to let the EC30 start to do its thing and then change the filter. That could be tomorrow or as late as 3 November based upon my schedule...

    Cleaning a mighty vac.

Thanks. I'll have to look at that vs the cost of solvents. Pulling samples was a secondary consideration and I am reaching the point where there is little left to learn from UOAs where the manufacturer's recommendation isn't exceeded. A UOA costs about the same as an oil change on a little...

    Cleaning a mighty vac.

Yesterday I purchased a fluid extractor from Harbor Freight that is similar to the Mighty Vac. The initial intent was to draw off some oil in a vehicle and replace it with HPL EC30. The secondary purpose is to pull oil samples for the lab without actually draining the oil. A case in point...

Valvoline Restore and Protect in Toyota Prius with 291K miles

Let's hope so. Earlier today I picked up the Harbor Freight version of the Mighty Vac and ordered some HPL EC30 for the Accord. The plan is to pull a quart of used oil, replace that with a quart of EC30, change the filter to a Fram Tough Guard 7317 and let it go for another thousand miles or...

Valvoline Restore and Protect in Toyota Prius with 291K miles

I've never changed the oil in either Prius but that being said I've just returned from Walmart with a five quart jug of 0w-20 Valvoline Restore and Protect for the 2010.

2500 miles or 3 months oil change

I wouldn't say stupid, but this is obviously excessive. A 5K OCI is excessive in most cases, but it isn't stupid either.

Valvoline Restore and Protect in Toyota Prius with 291K miles

That doesn't answer my question. Why are you confident that a 0w-8 is suitable for a 2008 Prius? Personal experience? Japanese recommendations?

Valvoline Restore and Protect in Toyota Prius with 291K miles

But how is the recommendation for a 2024 Camry relevant to a 2008 Prius?

Valvoline Restore and Protect in Toyota Prius with 291K miles

Why would you recommend a 0w-8 oil for a vehicle that calls for 0w-20? Is or was that the spec in Japan?

Post your latest small engine oil change

Is that a Troy-Bilt product or an MTD product? I cannot recall where the Bronco landed in their lineup. I have a Pony (5 HP) from 1985. At that time there was a Horse (8 HP) and an Econo Horse (7 HP). Where does your tiller land on this spectrum? I've been running mine on 15w-40 RT6 the...

    Getting used to miles/kWh

Speaking from personal experience with a small PHEV, a figure north of 3 miles per kWh is easily achievable for normal driving about town. Taking the same vehicle out on the highway at 70 MPH pushes that figure closer to 2 miles per kWh. Earlier this week I managed to deplete a full 7.2 kWh...

EV charging example costs more than it would to fill up a premium fuel car

I think that we are saying the same thing from different perspectives. I was a twice per year oil change guy with a pure ICE but now it will be once in 18 - 24 months. The number of hours on the oil won't change, but the characteristics of those hours will. Short trip / cold start miles are...

EV charging example costs more than it would to fill up a premium fuel car

So here is my experience having owned a PHEV for 21 months: Most of my daily driving is within the limited range of the battery and thus I basically have an EV on my hands the vast majority of the time. Most charging is done overnight at home. That being said I have solar panels and will...

It's not time wasted if you happen to be sleeping at the time.

EV charging example costs more than it would to fill up a premium fuel car

Actually it does extend your OCI from a mileage perspective. Presently I am 11k miles into an OCI but ICE miles account less than a third of that. 20k miles in my use case might mean 6500 miles on the oil at most.

kohler command pro 10w30 or 10w50?

0W-20/30 for the cars 5W-30 for the snow blower 15w-40 for the remainder of the OPE You may all now return to your regular channel, even if you do not understands the reference.

    Post your latest oil change

In my use case an OCI of less than 20k is most likely a waste. The ICE runs under two circumstances. The first of these is where we take the vehicle on road trips and the ICE powers the car at highway speed for hundreds of miles. Obviously that is pretty easy on a synthetic oil. The second...

    Post your latest oil change

Since that is a PHEV much depends upon the ratio of ICE to total miles is. Presently I am at 4000 ICE miles to 12,000 total miles using M1 EP. At this rate it would be pretty foolish and wasteful for me to change the oil at 16K or even 20K. So how many ICE miles did your sister drive out of...
