What are you working on today?

Finally completed the front suspension work on my nephew’s Dodge Ram 1500 pickup. New control arms, brakes, links, etc. Right side went ok, but the left lower control arm eccentric bolts were seized into the bushings… my torch couldn’t heat that enough, I don’t have acetylene ( yet; this...

Solar battery maintainers with cigarette plugs?

Many years ago I used to store two of my vehicles for the winter here in northern Minnesota: a 1995 Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham and a 2010 Ford E350 cargo van. Both being rear wheel drive I did not want to use them on slippery roads, and I was preserving the Cadillac by keeping it off salty...

    Hit the used laptop lotto

Nice score! I needed a new laptop for Forscan, AlfaOBD, etc., after my Dell Rugged laptop had a failed hard drive caddy. I got a Lenovo ThinkPad, but I’d have loved to nab that Precision you got. Enjoy the win! 😎👍

Vehicle Sighting - mid-'80s Buick Le Sabre

I had a 1990 Oldsmobile Ninety-Eight Brougham back in 1996. Gold color, and durable as h#ll. Boring old box that just worked. My (late) older brother was commuting with me one hot August and was looking at the car computer info… told me we were overheating. Really? Nope. It was at 227*F when...

    What happened to Snap-On Trucks?

I see Matco more often than Snap-on… Although the Snap-on guy hangs around the local Exhaust Pros shop each time I’ve seen him. No Mac or Cornwell trucks in our area (Northern MN).

What are you working on today?

Assisted my brother with his Jeep project. He ordered an E85 conversion kit for his Wrangler. It has the 3.6 V6 Pentastar (no ticks yet!) and this conversion isn’t a stretch. After all, the versions in minivans are Flex Fuel already. 👍 Pulled the intake, and while he reviewed instructions I...

What are you working on today?

Loaded the replacement engine and trailered up my nephew’s Crown Victoria for the drive to the shop. Should be ready to go in a couple of weeks. Now, I’ll get started on my projects… the Mini is slated within the next few days. Timing chain set, water pump, etc., are on my project plan. 😎

Has Ebay transformed from a primarily auction site to a buy it now site?

Yes, and I didn’t think about it until now. It’s become like a version of Amazon. I do occasionally see an actual bidding auction but that’s the rarity.

If you want to see what a NOS Boss 429 battery looks like

New old stock can command a premium to an originalist car guy who wants every screw head, fastener, sticker, etc., to be as authentic as possible. I’ve read an article about a restorer (Corvette) who even included overspray paint in some places to emulate the factory slop on the paint. Is this...

What are you working on today?

Sold the remains of two Panther platform cars: a 1999 Ford Crown Victoria and a 1998 Mercury Grand Marquis. Engines were shot, transmissions might have been ok, but they were destined for the scrapper. Buyer is going to use them for training his daughters on demolition derby. Such an end for...

    Smoking, whistling battery.

Had this happen with the Mercury Grand Marquis my niece is using (picked up a Dodge Grand Caravan with a silent 3.6 Pentastar for her; still reconditioning that). The O’Reilly alternator I put in to replace the dead original was putting out 18 volts, causing a ton of electrical havoc. Yes, the...

    2013 Outback

One other thing to check, and it’s cheap to fix… I have a 2010 Outback with the 2.5 4 cylinder that I worked on for my brother recently. My nephew is looking at moving to it for its fuel efficiency, so we fixed it up after a small crash. I had every light on on the dashboard: brakes, cruise...

What are you working on today?

Stripping parts off of an old 1999 Ford Crown Victoria and my old 1998 Mercury Grand Marquis. Parts guy at my local Irish themed parts chain store is interested in buying these hulks for derby use. So I got busy stripping out radios, trim, door panels, switches, taillights, etc., for resale...

New Water Pump for 1993 E350

    It’s an “Econoline E350”… 🫣🤣

2001 Lincoln Continental - $5000 repair estimate in front suspension & steering - reasonable?

By the way, just to clarify, this generation of Lincoln Continental isn’t a “Panther” platform Ford, but is a Ford FN9 platform, which makes the Continental related to the front wheel drive Mercury Sable and Ford Taurus.

2001 Lincoln Continental - $5000 repair estimate in front suspension & steering - reasonable?

Like others have said: stay away from chain store shops like Meineke, etc. A friend of mine has one of these, probably the same color even. He’s giving it to me because it’s worn out. Needs everything redone, and I told him that 6 years ago when I rode in it. New front suspension, rear, brakes...

    OReilly's order pickup

One store staffed mostly by people who don’t have a lot of experience with cars tends to be the one that I need to wait while they figure out my online order and that I really truly paid for it. The other one has guys who have done some work themselves and know the process for online pickup...

What are you working on today?

Unloaded salvage Ford 4.6 V8 I picked up Friday. It’s going into my nephew’s Crown Victoria with a spin bearing. I’m going to do some maintenance while the replacement is out and on my new lift table and engine stand. My niece brought the Mercury Grand Marquis out with electric issues...

How dumb would buying a 2013 Chrysler 200 be?

I’m joining the chorus on the 200: walk away and don’t look back. Salesman wants it gone because he can’t convince anyone to take it. Once it’s sold he doesn’t have to work hard to move it anymore. My sister had one. She bought it without my input because the Ford dealer had it in on trade and...
