    M1 ESP X4 0W-40 4.2k mi; 2010 Mazda 3 2.5L 143.7k mi

Here is the latest UOA. There was a lot of idle time and bumper-to-bumper NJ/NYC traffic. First sample was M1 FS 0W-40 after unknown 0W-20. Second sample is ESP X3. Third sample is ESP X4. Interesting that the ESP X4 has almost the same levels of ZDDP as the FS now.

Euro oil spec thats better than dexos 1/r?

For starters, the M1 0W-40 has a higher HTHS even after the HPL shear tests than the QS 5W-30 does out of the bottle. Second, it has an even more robust additive package (on paper). Given both of these, it seems dubious that the poster's claims of higher oil pressure at high temps and less wear...

    Confessions of a Recovering Thickie

Two things. One, we can’t say that wear metals via UOA tell the entire story. Two, it is true that in certain areas of the engine like valvetrain, the viscosity appears to be secondary to the anti-wear package. Especially for journal bearings, viscosity / HTHS is critically important but once...

Euro oil spec thats better than dexos 1/r?

They will still have a problem because the M1 FS bottles will not say DexosR if Mobil isn't cooperating or compensated for the change I would imagine. Not many people are gonna search that database to see what oils are actually DexosR. Every GM dealership stocks the Supercar (ESP) though.

Euro oil spec thats better than dexos 1/r?

Yes and most DexosR (Dexos2) oils are just ACEA C3 in reality.

Euro oil spec thats better than dexos 1/r?

Interesting, did not know FS received DexosR. The Mobil PDS does not show it yet. The TSB from GM shows the oil used as part of the recall campaign is PN 19432866 (US) / 19433272 (Canada) which is the Supercar / ESP 0W-40. Of course it does say just DexosR so you are correct that FS would...

Euro oil spec thats better than dexos 1/r?

They are giving it ESP (Supercar) 0W-40 but your point still stands.

Euro specialized indy-mechanics all seem to use LiquiMoly?

LiquiMarketing Honestly, if I ran a Euro shop I might use them also. Customers like it, they like the marketing, and it makes them feel good. Gives your business an air of quality true or not.

What is HT-12 green coolant vs just regular green?

HT-12 is typically a Euro coolant. BMW uses it now. I would not mix it.

    New Mobil 1 C40 GT 0W-40

The answer is that no one outside Porsche knows. Only Porsche knows if the DLC coatings they chose are compatible with the particular forms of ZDDP and moly additives they specified that oil to use. This is why people are taking a gamble using an oil that does not meet any approvals in a...

    Layering Griots 3-in-1 Ceramic

That’s contrary to the advice of almost every other ceramic spray / coating and what basics I know of polysiloxane coatings. The reason to apply a second layer before the first is fully cured is that it creates better chemical bonding between the layers. When the first layer is still in a...

    Idemitsu

I think traditionally, going back a long time, there could be some association with VI and quality of base oil. Now though, you really have no idea as kschachn mentions, since the use of VII appears to have increased in the push for fuel economy. In fact, some of the finished oils with the...

    Layering Griots 3-in-1 Ceramic

I meant for layering as in a second layer after the first. The majority of curing occurs quickly. Especially compared to a bottled coating. For layering you do not want a fully cured surface.

    Layering Griots 3-in-1 Ceramic

I think it will have to be shorter for a product like Griot’s. These sprays cure fast. I tried this with Fireball Pirouette on an acrylic shower mirror and I got noticeably better (insane) hydrophobics with two layers after about 15 min. I use this mirror kind of as a test and waiting longer...

    Layering Griots 3-in-1 Ceramic

Layering can work after setup but before complete curing. It improves the density of the film build. The problem is no one knows when this magic time period is for Griot’s 3-in-1. It is typically an hour with a bottled coating. Of course it depends on chemistry and diminishing returns apply.

Full synthetic 20w-50 for 86 535i(m30b34). Vr1 bad for daily driver?

Mobil 1 X2 5W-50 (same additive package as FS 0W-40 so it has LL01 if not for 50 grade). You could also run the BMW or Castrol 10W-60. Red Line 5W-50.

Ravenol RSS 10W-60 - Worth it?

Sure. I’m not so obsessed with No VII though. Some oils like ESP X3/X4 or Ravenol’s 0Ws etc. hold up really well so it depends on the VII chosen. I am personally thinking of running 300V 5W-50 since the HTHS is close to the Castrol but yes it would be good to start with a 50 that will hold...

Ravenol RSS 10W-60 - Worth it?

As someone who owns one of these engines that uses 10W-60 now, even low VII would be good but actually what I really find interesting is if it’s possible to make a 5W-50 or 60 with HTHS > 5.0.

Ravenol RSS 10W-60 - Worth it?

That would be quite evasive and some wordsmithing atypical for Germans but maybe so.
