Where to get a new magnetic oil plug?

I got mine from Temu. No regrets.

High quality magnetic oil drain plug.

Those magnets are N48 and only have a working temperature of about 80 deg C (~176 deg F). I wouldn't be putting them in my engine.

Oil experts, please share your knowledge.

No engineer ever told me about using the correct API spec and choosing a viscosity based on the SAE temperature rating but it's something I've always done. Luckily 5w40 is suitable for my location so I can (and do) use Valvoline Synpower 5w40 in everything I own that takes oil.

    What's everyone's favorite 0w-20 these days?

My favorite 0w20 is Valvoline SynPower 5w40.

How cramped is the V6 Toyota Highlander under the hood?

This is evidence that most information posted on Reddit is garbage and should be ignored. The noisy cam phaser problem on Toyota's AR engines is potentially catastrophic and yet extremely cheap and easy to fix. I fixed mine with a 5 cent part from Temu and about an hour of my time. The balance...

post your latest transmission lubricant change.

There's many other circumstances that warrant additional ATF cooling other than towing. For example, driving in sport mode with the convertor lock-up disabled, driving into a head wind, racing, driving in soft sand etc. It's also possible (and sometimes recommended) to remove the ATF thermostat...

Best 5W-40 or 0W-40 For DI Noise?

I mixed one part 15w40 with three and a half parts 5w40 to stop my engine from ticking. After that I simply turned up the radio.

post your latest transmission lubricant change.

The graph was published in 2024, but I do question the bona fides of the author of the article it was attached to. Notwithstanding, it's still very relevant insomuch as it correctly notes that heat is the number one killer of automatic transmissions. Also, irrespective of modern ATF's and any...

post your latest transmission lubricant change.

Lifetime fluids are only meant to last the lifetime of the warranty. IMO the idea of a lifetime fluid (ATF or others) is just silly. Anyhow, a good way to extend the life of ATF is to keep it cool. My vehicle runs the OEM ATF cooler and two auxiliary ATF coolers. So far, so good.

Reducing wheel size + switching to higher profile tires

I did this on my vehicle. I swapped 17in OEM wheels with 215/55R17 tires to 16in wheels with 205/65R16 tires. The new wheel/tire combo has approx. 1/3in larger diameter, which worked to almost correct Toyota's low reading speedo. It also ensured the new 16in spare tire fitted in the spare tire...

anything to look out for when getting a brake fluid change?

For less than the cost of an alleged fluid change you can purchase a pneumatic brake fluid flush device and change all of your fluid from the reservoir to each caliper (or wheel cylinder). It's a very easy job and only takes about 20 mins once you're set up and get started.

This is what happens when a cook puts mustard on a hot dog ...

Imagine, if you will, a world where people prepared their food (including hot dogs, which aren't really food) they way they liked it and didn't give a flying duck about other people's choices nor try to impose their personal preferences onto others.

How common are torn boots on suspension components?

A decent quality and correctly installed ball joint boot should last at least several years. I've never had a road driven vehicle's ball joint boot rip in my entire driving life. My current vehicle is 19 years old and has unripped original ball joint boots. I'd wager your mechanic/technician...

Havoline now in on the, "Protects up to..." maketing with the introduction of API SQ

I use Castrol Vecton in my diesel vehicle. It says on the oil drum: "Approved by MAN for up to 120,000 km and Mercedes Benz, Volvo, and Renault for up to 100,000 km in accordance with their specifications". So, not changing the oil in a car most people only own for a couple of years or for the...

High quality magnetic oil drain plug.

I've purchased a lot of products from Temu. So far they've all been just as good in quality as anything you can purchase anywhere else but much cheaper. Anyhow, if you don't want to buy from Temu, I'm not concerned.

    Cordless impact wrench

I have a 1000NM (~740 ft-lb) Bosch with a 1/2" drive. So, far it's defeated everything I used it on. I also have a Bosch 1/4" hex drive impact wrench and two Bosch Freaks with a 1/4" hex / 1/2" square drive combo chuck. It's been a long time since I've had to get the air powered rattle gun out...
