    Tesla is about to explode?

When Iomega had a problem with their Zip drives which owners called the "click of death", what did they do? Come out with a new drive called the "Clik!". It was brilliant. I like their tech at a cell level and admire the thermal control effectiveness at the pack level, but am uncomfortable...

    RAM Transfer Case Fluid

With further research I see that the clutch is not directly controlled but through a mechanical ball and ramp servo, much like clutches in many FWD-based AWD systems. The end result is that (a) it must slip slightly to provide a clamping force that can be modulated, and (b) it can't have nearly...

Grease on Manual transmission shifter that is compatible with/safe in a manual transmission?

Gears aren't going to care. Perhaps use any clear grease if you're concerned rather than a moly type.

What Factors Are Swaying EV Adoption in the U.S.?

40 min might be closer to the truth. People who actually own EVs wouldn't spend more than that charging.

    RAM Transfer Case Fluid

From all descriptions I can find OP's full-time 4WD transfer case uses a clutch instead of a mechanically-lockable center differential. Why on earth would they evolve to that? I get the desire to modulate lockup between front and rear axles but I can't see how frequently that would be useful...

What Factors Are Swaying EV Adoption in the U.S.?

The core advantage is that fossil-based carbon emissions are limited to what it takes to generate, transport, convert and supply the energy to the car, nevermind manufacturing it. Without a high percentage of renewable electricity available you're still mostly at square one in the bigger picture.

What will wear items be in electric cars once common?

Sorry, you're not understanding how this works. Every 450 kms driven is equivalent to one full-charge cycle no matter how it's drawn over the battery's capacity. If I drive from 100% to 50% then charge back up to 100% I've used up 1/2 of a full-charge cycle on the battery pack. If I use 10% of...

What will wear items be in electric cars once common?

It's not that simplistic. They're derated by the manufacturer to obtain the life requested in the automaker's RFQ to suit an EV application. Instead of operating between 2.50 and 4.20 volts, an EV lithium-ion cell may be restricted to 3.15 to 4.15 volts which allows about 1200 full-charge cycles...

Show us the "Luxuries" you own

I only have a choice of three drill presses at the local DIY store on this island. Despite that I'll only use it twice a year I had to have the quality option:

Sony is getting into the EV car biz

SONY have no idea how to do this in today's world. Distraction rather than innovation: "The car has 33 safety sensors, sophisticated in-car entertainment with high-quality speakers, and impressive gaming capabilities."

What Factors Are Swaying EV Adoption in the U.S.?

I find living with an EV a bit boring despite that I can easily outrun most ICE cars on our roads. My small manual-shift 4-cylinder SUV is more engaging and entertaining, even if slow and 4x more expensive to fuel. It puts a smile on my face everytime I drive it while the EV is just, well...

What Factors Are Swaying EV Adoption in the U.S.?

That article has some comical errors, "constant velocity transmissions", "boxes with up to fifty individual cells that look a bit like a AA battery". And if he knew anything about EV gearboxes he'd know that they all use ATF or gear oil of similar specifications, and very few are 2-speed.

What will wear items be in electric cars once common?

They're all brushless and I can't quite see that the electronics are going to "wear out." What has been happening in practice is not so much wear but water and dirt ingress to electronics and latch mechanisms on EVs with front-mounted charge ports. Not only the door latch itself but the...

What will wear items be in electric cars once common?

Brushes, lol, it's not a forklift! Aside from the rust-related issues that I'll never see it's only tires and suspension that immediately come to mind. However in some EVs such as my own and the Nissan Leaf, the brake hydraulics are quite complicated because the pedal feel has to be faked when...

Tesla had 308,600 deliveries. Blockbuster Q4; shattering forecast. Have mercy.

Whatever the PE happens to be I see a whole lot more certainty in TSLA than I do with F or GM. One day the urgency will sink in.

    Magnetic Drain Plugs?

Yes, I bought the Votex as well, two in fact. Especially in aluminium gear casings it's highly desirable that the magnet stays in place, so quality counts. In an engine a loose magnet will quickly find a harmless ferrous surface. In a gearbox, well, I don't even want to think about it ... Some...

    Magnetic Drain Plugs?

I think they're optional for an engine but absolutely essential for any splash-lubricated gearbox, reducer or diff, and I can't recall ever seeing any without one. That is until I bought my Hyundai EV. Hyundai/Kia decided it was better to save $3 and let the wear particles circulate in the...

wheel spacers how bad are they on wheel bearings or other suspension components

I'd be more worried about changing the steering geometry scrub radius at the front rather than the bearings. The back is less of an issue.

    Electric vehicle maintenance

Absolutely, DIY is important. Hyundai and Kia owners of 2020+ models are faced with an expensive non-conductive coolant change at 40k miles/60k km. Just the 13 L of coolant required is reported to cost around $700. Luckily mine is old enough to use a conventional coolant for which the only...
