    EV styles

Many EVs use automatic louvres to block airflow into the radiator and AC when not needed to reduce drag. There's very little heat loss from the motor and driver hardware.

Towing a Tesla with a rope to charge

There are many discussion point here. Is it legal to tow using just a rope, and at the full speed limit? Is that Mercedes transmission now toast? Why did they start without a full tank? Funny how casual the Merc driver was about the gas level. But, yeah, the EV has no idea it's not just driving...

    EV styles

Agree. I don't even want the driving assistance features, just a simple design with a gear selector that looks like a conventional automatic. I also want a full or spacesaver spare tire rather than just a can of goop.

What Factors Are Swaying EV Adoption in the U.S.?

I think one challenge here is that the quantity of heat available from the battery and subsystems may not be particularly high compared to cabin requirements. Charging losses might be around 1% of the prevailing charge rate or tractive power. I understand the Tesla 3/Y does this while the...

What Factors Are Swaying EV Adoption in the U.S.?

Well, in global regions with high percentages of renewable electricity they could potentially reduce CO2 emissions in the transportation sector. That is the primary goal. If you're not clear as to why that's a good thing then more study is required on your part. It's certainly not...

“For BP, car chargers to overtake pumps in profitability race”

The utilisation can be judged using plugshare.com since the status of many stations is publically available in real time. Grey tags are fully in-use.

    Thicker or thinner gearbox oil

Ditto. Installed this oil in my Grand Vitara 4WD 5-spd manual gearbox as an experiment to see how much it improves the shifting, which of course it does very much and the operating temp measures 7°C lower. The Suzuki spec is 75W-85 or 75W-90, same as the SX4 which of course is a full traverse...

“For BP, car chargers to overtake pumps in profitability race”

Ideally, yes, however almost all our (NZ) national charging infrastructure is managed and mostly owned by only one private company, thankfully one with a conscience. Certainly in the long term competition will be essential. Given the cost of the 2 x 300kW units I think it will be years before...

“For BP, car chargers to overtake pumps in profitability race”

That 300 kW charger bills at the higher of $0.60/kWh or $0.35/min so the summary on the screen would have translated to $17 or $14, hence the bill was $17. The lowest charge rate that will fall into the per-kWh billing category is 35 kW, no doubt intended to avoid overcharging older EVs, most...

“For BP, car chargers to overtake pumps in profitability race”

You don't always need to justify prime gas station-style forecourt real estate. This is a clever example in a town 140 km from me. Two 300 kW chargers placed in the median between a Burger King and a free public parking lot. Everything in this town is within a 5 minute walk from here. not my...

    Charging and taking advantage

You'd need to work that out to be sure. It's all a matter of how quickly you'll recover the additional purchase cost of the EV based on the miles you do per year. The big savings comes from charging at home.

“For BP, car chargers to overtake pumps in profitability race”

One of our local BP stations quietly installed an EV charger recently with Chademo, CCS and AC. They haven't worked out how to bill for it yet so it's currently free. Tesla's here use CCS. But also about a year ago some fool managed to burn down the entire forecourt by checking the level of a...

    Charging and taking advantage

With EVs having ever-increasing range drivers can and will become more picky about where they stop. We have some chargers in the middle of nowhere that were positioned for short range EVs (early Leaf models). Those now sit mostly unused, visited only by spiders.

    BMW using brushed motors

Lol, don't rely on journalists for your technical education. He's used the wrong terminology. Guess what "Schleifring" means in German? The brushes provide a fixed magnetic field at the rotor to replace permanent magnets. It uses slip rings to transfer the current. There is no commutation...

    BMW using brushed motors

Surely everyone here knows how an alternator works?? It's much the same - the current flow is low through the brushes and they engage slip rings rather than a segmented commutator so wear is minimal. It's a not a forklift motor. How often do you change the brushes on your alternator? Does the...

    BMW using brushed motors

Brushes and slip rings rather than brushes and commutators if I understand correctly, just like an alternator being used as a motor. Commutation is still done in the field as with a PM motor.

Anybody using a thermal imaging camera?

We had one at work 15 years ago, a FLIR bare-bones, $25k bought for a project. It could readily see heat footprints on linoleum after someone walked by.
