What is happening in the manufacturing that is causing cam/lifter issues? From what I remember after the 70's cam problems went away and then 2000 on they came back. Is it the machining or issues with the alloys being used?

That's a diode, You need to install a fuse inline with the diode or you may have problems if that circuit shorts to ground.

Also after browsing multiple agm manufacturer websites I've been unable to find any recommendation against using agm in older vehicles. Maybe you should stick to what your car came with if you are concerned.
