    Best Off-the-Shelf xW-40 or xW-50 Oil....that Cleans?

For the record. Did a B12 piston soak over the weekend. 3 cans. No mosquitos in a 5 mile radius exist now. Smoked like crazy.

Urban Legend from decades ago ... synthetic oil was "too slick" for engines

I was there in the 90's with my 1978 Camaro with a 1979 305 that someone had replaced the stock V6 with before I got it. That engine was bone stock except for the intake manifold, cam and carb. I put every synthetic oil I could find in there because....horsepower! The only thing that...

    Best Off-the-Shelf xW-40 or xW-50 Oil....that Cleans?

Two things: 1. I've always had a plan to install a Tee at the oil pressure sending unit and permanently attach a mechanical gauge to mount in the engine bay to know exactly what the oil pressure is. Some day. 2. I think I talked myself into a plan. I'm going to do a B12 piston soak this...

    Best Off-the-Shelf xW-40 or xW-50 Oil....that Cleans?

I'm very familiar with HPL...I use their Premium Plus and Green ATF in my GMC Canyon and wife's Mazda CX-5. It fixed her oil burning issue btw (after a B12 piston soak). I just have a hard time justifying the cost for a 110hp engine that probably gets driven 1.5k-3k miles a year, probably...

    Best Off-the-Shelf xW-40 or xW-50 Oil....that Cleans?

It might be more like 1 quart per 1k miles but I'm honestly not sure as I don't really keep track of the mileage since it is driven mostly during the nicer weather. I was considering maybe VRP's 5W-30 and adding a quart of HPL's EC-40. But at that point I might as well just get HPL's PCMO 20W-50.

    Best Off-the-Shelf xW-40 or xW-50 Oil....that Cleans?

Working on my 1987 Toyota 4Runner with a 22RE. These engines have pretty low oil pressure at idle so in the summer I run a xW-40 or xW-50. I've been burning some oil lately....about a quart per 500 miles. It is a pleasure vehicle so it only gets driven maybe 3k miles per year. Plenty of...

    Ignoring CEL

Sounds like my ex brother in law. The CEL usually means he has to yell at the person he bought the broken down S-box from and demand they fix it....even years later.

Poor little CVT! Change your fluid!

Sounds like a good plan! If it looks like this might turn into a long term fix you might want to consider changing the filter and cleaning the magnet if it has one. All that fresh new fluid can sometimes knock loose a bunch of grime that's built up over time.

Poor little CVT! Change your fluid!

This thread is giving me flashbacks of my wife's 2008 Nissan Versa with a Jatco CVT! Despite doing a spill and fill every 30k miles it began to die at 140k. Squealing sound at startup and would go into limp mode...it would move under idle only. It threw a code and it was something like "Low...

Heated Garages in Cold Climates and Mitigating Corrosion?

I live in MA, as do my parents so it gets pretty cold in the winter. I have a small detached 20x20 garage and my parents have an attached 24x24. Neither is insulated or heated. I store a vehicle in mine and plenty of tools, automotive and wood working. No signs of corrosion at all. My...

    HPL Cleaner - Drain Interval?

I did, but just one OCI because I learned about HPL and wanted to give it a shot. My wife does a lot of short trips so she doesn't rack up the miles very quick anymore, so a 3k OCI takes about 4 months. But I tried an OCI of Hotshot's Stiction Eliminator which is just an Ester additive (I...

    2016 CX-5 Under Valve Cover

Looks great! My wife's 2016 CX-5 with 150k is getting due for a valve cover gasket and I hope it is in this good of shape. From what I can tell looking through the fill port it probably will be. She burned oil and I've done a piston soak, a few OCI's with VRP, some HPL EC30 with Mobil1 EP...

Best way to remove snapped starter bolt???

Give the starter a whack, and get a pry bar in between the starter and the bellhousing and pry the starter off. You need to get some penetrating oil at the threads right at the bellhousing to try and get the oil to wick into the bellhousing. Spray a couple times each day, give the...

Colorado 3.6 P0019 VVT and Spark Plug replacement

@buster There are a number of aftermarket CAI's. I did the best of both worlds, I wanted to get rid of the engine cover and replace the intake tube ONLY. This would clean the engine bay up (my preference) and keep the factory air box and paper filter. True CAI's have their place but I don't...

Recommend sprayer/air compressor combo for fluid film/woolwax

Does Fluid Film, Woolwax or other similar viscosity product have any guidance? You may be ignoring the other important spec for air compressors....CFM. My 5 gallon, 1HP compressor will turn an air tool for a few seconds when it is fully charged with air but it doesn't have the CFM to use most...

ACDelco TDS - Programming GM Modules?

Wow, thank you everyone for the comments! It sounds like its a bit over my head at the moment. I have a 50A charger but I'd rather not brick some modules. The real driver behind this thought was the Infotainment screen. It tends to reset every now and then while using Android Auto causing...

ACDelco TDS - Programming GM Modules?

Anyone have experience using GM's ACDelco TDS (Technical Delivery System) and their Service Programming System (SPS2)? Now that I'm out of warranty I'm thinking about getting all the modules in my 2021 GMC Canyon programmed with the latest and greatest. I've got a couple annoying glitches in...

Transmission Fluid - Amsoil Signature ATL vs HPL Green CC

Well, the combined shipping came to much less on the HPL Green CC. It ended up being $390. I figured for the extra $50 I'd give the HPL a shot. I've used Amsoil products on multiple vehicles with great success but I'm an HPL fanboy so I'll give it a try.

Transmission Fluid - Amsoil Signature ATL vs HPL Green CC

I'm going to be replacing all the fluid in my 2021 GMC Canyon and 2016 Mazda CX-5. The GMC takes Dexron LV HP (Mobil blue bottle) and the Mazda takes Mazda ATF-FZ. Not a drain and fill, a 100% fluid replacement. Amsoil ATL and HPL Green CC are 100% compatible with both vehicles and their...

Fluid film and wool wax question

I've used POR-15 on a couple of vehicles. Religiously followed the prep. Got rid of as much loose rust as possible and used a wire wheel and brush where possible. Used their Cleaner/Degreaser, then their Metal Prep which is a zinc phosphate wash, then two coats of POR-15. My experience is...
