How much difference does oil really make?

There's a phrase in the lubrication industry, "As thick as necessary, as thin as possible".

How much difference does oil really make?

How can you be so sure that they "barely squeak by" and didn't just choose to forgo extra approvals due to cost versus return on investment for their market segment?

Who said anything about "too many additives"? It's common knowledge around here that ZDDP and phosphorus levels in the current crop of diesels oils have been reduced compared to years past. That was the whole draw to people using Rotella in gas engines before (for those who subscribed to that)...

Going to be hard to find any 5W-40 in a high mileage variant, but I'd imagine Mobil 1 10W-40 HM would be a good start.

^ Can we stop posting basic oil analysis sheets as if they accurately portray every additive in a given oil yet?

I agree, and even though OP stated that this Delo is SN (implying it's dual rated) I've never understood the deal with running a diesel oil in a gas engine except for oils that have shown to be pretty phenomenal overall like Mobil ESP. I'm with you, if this were my engine and assuming it...

GR Corolla on track with 0W-20 blows engine and crashes

You're entirely missing the point. People have tracked Panther platform Fords just for fun. You can track anything if it's prepped a bit.

GR Corolla on track with 0W-20 blows engine and crashes

Okay, so you take whatever Toyota you have in mind, install an oil cooler, track pads, suitable oil, and?

Respectfully, recording oil temps for a lawn mower engine? Why?

I think 15w-40 in my jeep was a mistake

I was being sarcastic. Thanks for the refresher though.

I think 15w-40 in my jeep was a mistake

No, it's funny, that's actually the very first I'm ever hearing of this.

Two brand new Fram Endurance FE3600 filters - failed quality control

This is why I don't like louvers. The consistency is terrible, whereas with tubes with holes, I've never seen holes that weren't punched all the way through the entire material. It's not that louvers can't flow enough oil when they're punched properly, it's that many don't seem to be punched...

Don't tell that to the "thin oil is better because it sheds heat faster!" crowd among us...

I think 15w-40 in my jeep was a mistake

It isn't an engine thing, it's a viscosity thing. Talking cold cranking and pumpability floors as defined by grade. I think the fear-mongering here is just hilarious sometimes. You're telling somebody that 15W might not even be suitable for summer night-time starts now. Alrighty. Implying that...

I think 15w-40 in my jeep was a mistake

To those saying placebo effect, disagree. I can tell very definitively that my Honda J35 feels draggier on 5W-30 back to back with 5W-20. Maybe it can't be felt as much with certain engines, or certain people are less in tune with their vehicles, but what OP is describing is 100% legitimate.

Mobil 1 filter at Walmart has improved 👍

I've bought two of these so far, but different model numbers for different engines. Both were made in Vietnam. I'll be sticking with these for the foreseeable future.
