Which oil next? Experiment on 2018 Outback

I put 0w30 ESP in my '24 Forester. Same 0w30 ESP in a '25 Toyota 3.5 V6. Both are spec'd for 0w20. Once I get out of warranty and the "free" oil changes at 10,000 and 20, 000 miles, I plan to go with an HPL oil in the Toyota engine (maybe No VII 10w20?) and run it at least 10,000 miles. Forester...

Would a C3 Oil Protect a Timing Chain Better Than a C2 Oil?

So you are counting the difference between 0w and 10w as double-the-difference since there is a 5w in between, but you count the difference between 30 and 40 as one grade. I guess you can slice and dice any way you want to...it's still not precise.

    Valvoline Restore & Protect

Probably partly depends upon the characteristics of crankcase mist handling in a particular setup. If crankcase oil mist can be directed across the backs of inlet valves...maybe an oil with great cleaning abilities could help remove some of those deposits. Toyota sure seems to have a good system...

Would a C3 Oil Protect a Timing Chain Better Than a C2 Oil?

The old "German Castrol" 0w30 comes to mind! (should have written that in the previous post...but my mind isn't as quick as it used to be)

Would a C3 Oil Protect a Timing Chain Better Than a C2 Oil?

Also technically correct! It's not quite as simple as subtracting the first number from the second.

Would a C3 Oil Protect a Timing Chain Better Than a C2 Oil?

Just being technical here: the "spread" is the same between 10w40 and 0w30. The "spread" is 30 in both cases.

Amsoil 5w20 S.S. SN Good to Protect Against LSPI ?

Agree totally. The higher combustion chamber pressure is what increases the risk to boosted engines under low RPM/high load. A compression ratio of 12.5:1 in a naturally aspirated engine has a lower combustion chamber pressure than a highly boosted engine with a lower compression ratio...the...

Amsoil 5w20 S.S. SN Good to Protect Against LSPI ?

My main point is simply that it doesn't fit the characteristics of an engine prone to LSPI issues. A secondary point is that 12.5:1 isn't "high compression" compared to a boosted engine. I would be extremely surprised to learn this engine is prone to LSPI.

Amsoil 5w20 S.S. SN Good to Protect Against LSPI ?

Do you have evidence that this engine is prone to LSPI? It sure doesn't fit the stereotypical profile.

Motor Oil for 2024 Subaru BRZ

If you are going to "wring her out" a lot, I'd suggest an Xw-30 in it. Does it have a 6000 mile OCI specified like many of the other Subaru engines in that year? I run good quality 0w20 oil in a 2024 Forester and change it every 5000 miles since it's so easy to remember, and I'm sure this is...

Metal Specs in Center Tube/Core of New Oil Filters?

Now I have ANOTHER weird habit to explain! It sure can't hurt, and it could catch "trash" that otherwise is going who-knows-where in the engine...

Early Filter change in new Engine

Showing the worst areas. The tiny silver specs in some of the pleats didn't show up very well...but, there are a couple of big "hits" I captured.

Early Filter change in new Engine

Re-read the first four words...:) If you stick around a while, you'll find there are many oils that can go at least 10,000 miles.

Early Filter change in new Engine

Changed oil and filter on a new 2025 Lexus ES 350 F-Sport at 254 miles. I've often done early oil/filter changes on new engines, but I never cut open the filters. The 3.5L V6 Toyota filter is a replaceable cartridge type, so it was simple to view. EVERY pleat contained easily visible...

M1 0W30 ESP : High HTHS 3.5 Gas Mileage Shock

Agreed. I do find it interesting that 100% highway trip manual calculations are closer to the Computer estimate than around-town trips....even with the variable of not using "the usual" pump to fill up.

M1 0W30 ESP : High HTHS 3.5 Gas Mileage Shock

It's an attempt at establishing a repeatable pattern of behaviors. Over-filling can play havoc with tank venting systems, and doing it this way, I've not had tank vent problems...so I keep on doing it. There are SO MANY variables in determining MPGs. Is the pump running at the same speed every...

M1 0W30 ESP : High HTHS 3.5 Gas Mileage Shock

I fill up at the same pump 90% of the time. I run the pump at full-flow until it stops, wait a second, then run it one more time at about half-flow until it stops. My computer over-estimates mpg about 1 mpg compared to hand-calculations. If I use any other pump, my computer estimation varies...

    2020 Subaru 2.4l Turbo 18.4k mi; Mobil 1 T-SUV 5w-30/AFE 0w-20 blend, 3.3k mi

They cannot claim a step up to 30 weight would harm the engine. Look at it this way...when the engine starts cold, the viscosity is extremely high....much higher than even a 60 weight would be at optimal operating temp. Unless and until you get the engine working fairly hard, the temp may not...

Ever Notice You Get Less MPG Just After an Oil Change?

The smaller the engine, the more effect in my experience. Back in the 1970's I noted every tankful and mileage of every car/truck I've ever owned. A Toyota Tercel was one of those. It ALMOST always got slightly less mpg the first few tanks after an oil change. At first I thought I might be...
