I ran it for the recommended 2000 miles and I saw no real change in the discoloration in the valve train area on my Honda 2.4. That may not tell the whole story but that's what my eyes can see.

That would be my conclusion as well, likely just a faulty filter. I suppose some engines are just more sensitive to start up noise than others.

I've never questioned when members say certain oil filters cause start up noise (due to failed ADBV or other reason) as it makes logical sense. An empty oil filter has to fill back up before the engine can build oil pressure, low oil pressure certainly could cause a variety of engine noises...

The "best" Dexos oil is likely going to be M1 EP. As far as I know it still uses the highest percentage of "superior" base oils for that spec.
