Never Change Oil - Delvac Challenge

In this thread you want to challenge oil and engine, but most folks in most threads want to avoid challenging their oil & engine. I see their point of view and I share it to some extent, but I think what you're doing is awesome good fun and we may learn some things from it. So good on ya...

Oil Change Intervals 3k vs Longer with full synthetic

This ^. However, I'd go 7500 miles for most of those cars without concern, especially with good oil and good filter. The quality of filter matters as much or more than oil. The quality of filter varies more than quality of oil, IMO. I recommend NAPA Gold filter for my first choice. Oreilly...

Never Change Oil - Delvac Challenge

I think he missed your point. It's not a challenge for you. It's a challenge for the oil and possibly the engine.

Reuse oil that has 500 miles on it, safe?

Agreed. My mechanic did the same with almost new oil from one of my Jeeps. I don't recall why he had to drain the oil, but it happened soon after it had been changed. So he drained and reused the oil. This happened at around 35-40K miles. That Jeep never had any problems from it. It was the same...

    Blending Kirkland and Supertech oils???

Have you figured in the cost of a future heart attack or bowel cancer?

High Mileage Oil vs Extended Fill Oil

Agreed, but high mileage oils claim to have extra seal conditioner. Sounds like (at least some) extended OCI oils also claim to have extra seal conditioner. The oils that are both high mileage and extended OCI in one oil sound really good to me now that I know they exist. I might try one someday.

I think 15w-40 in my jeep was a mistake

Earlier someone recommended Mobil One 5w30 for the Jeep 4L. I respectfully disagree. I used to use M1 10w30 in my Jeep and it gave lower oil pressure at idle than I liked. M1 10w30 is thin. M1 5w30 is probably even thinner. Pennzoil Ultra Platinum is even thinner than Mobil One. I had low oil...

I think 15w-40 in my jeep was a mistake

HDEO made for gas and diesel engines would be ideal in a Jeep 4L if it was a 10w30, or ideally 5w30, such Rotella 5w30 Multivehicle. The problem with the HDEO the OP used is that it's 15w40. Also, any non Euro 5w40 that's made for gas engines would be fine. I would avoid 5w40 HDEO for diesel...

Never Change Oil - Delvac Challenge

It would include 1 or 2 per month country highway drive(s) for 30 min at 55 mph. The car is stored in a dry heated garage. So never very cold when started. I do a visual inspection of oil condition every 3 months when I check oil level. I check oil color and verify that oil is dry (not frothy)...

Never Change Oil - Delvac Challenge

Popular Mechanics did an experiment with a Troy Built lawmower. The mower was used every summer to mow a yard. Oil was not changed for 10 years. Only topped off as needed. At the end of 10 years an oil sample was sent to Blackstone Labs for a used oil analysis. Blackstone said the oil was near...

Reuse oil that has 500 miles on it, safe?

Good idea. Filter through cheese cloth if any doubts about contamination. Then reuse it. If sure the drain pan was clean then I'd reuse (without bothering with cheese cloth). Until time to reuse, store in a sealed container, such as the jug the oil came in.

Reuse oil that has 500 miles on it, safe?

I'd put it back in 5000 miles later.

Never Change Oil - Delvac Challenge

I'm thinking of putting Quaker State Ultimate Protection in a car and a NAPA Gold extended OCI filter and running my own experiment. Drain and refill oil once every 5 years. Replace filter at 10 years. This on a car that only drives 400 miles a year.

I think 15w-40 in my jeep was a mistake

10w40 & 15w40 are way to thick for a Jeep 4L, IMO. I owned 3 of them. 15w40 is way to thick at cold start and somewhat too thick at full op temp. 5w40 Valvoline or Mobil One Truck & SUV both do well in a 4L. Pennzoil Ultra Platinum 5w40 is good if you want a 5w40 that's on the thin end of...

High Mileage Oil vs Extended Fill Oil

As yes. The ester is the seal conditioner. I used to know that, but somewhere along the way I forgot that. Thank you for the reminder. You (and others) are a great resource of information. I like and appreciate an oil with good seal conditioner, but I still want a high (within grade) viscosity...

What’s going on with Quaker State Ultimate Protection?

I see what you're saying. You're correct that GTX has good/high cSt @ op temp and that was the only thing I'd mentioned looking for in regard to cSt. However, I also look at cSt at cold start and how well it pours cold. I didn't get that indepth earlier because I didn't know we'd discuss cSt...

High Mileage Oil vs Extended Fill Oil

That's very useful info. Thanks Edited in Later: I looked at datasheets. 5w30 oils at KV100.. Amsoil SS claims 10.3 cSt. Amsoil HM claims 11.1 cSt In regard to HM cars... So with Amsoil SS having that much lower op temp viscosity, is it likely that it really uses/leaks less oil than Amsoil HM...

What’s going on with Quaker State Ultimate Protection?

I think you're correct. I thought GTX is blend. Maybe I just assumed that after seeing cold temp flow tests in which GTX was one of the oils tested. I was wrong with regard to at least some grades being blend. Maybe I was wrong about all grades of GTX. I'm not sure. What I am sure of is that in...

What’s going on with Quaker State Ultimate Protection?

I just tried to download data sheet for Mobil 1 HM 10w30. The link is broken. I downloaded the M1 HM 5w30 data sheet 2 weeks ago, but now that link is broken too (as well as other grades data sheets links). QS isn't the only oil company with website management problems. Mobil's website is...
