What filters do you diesel owners use?

Motorcraft FL-1A on an old Perkins 4.236M in a boat.

Listening to the radio in your vehicle.....

Various FM public radio stations and some classic rock ones are memorized on my radio. I regularly drive 250 miles to a place in another state and can go the whole way and back by working through the saved ones in order. People I know often ask me for the latest news. I'm a news junky.

How long will all our modern flash memory electronics last?

With computer stuff I like to store important stuff in multiple places: cloud, internal storage, removable backup storage. For the backups I want spinning drives that last longer, but despite its many issues I suspect the cloud is the safest for most ordinary consumers. My stuff there will be...

    Letting Oil Drain Overnight

For some reason I found that I couldn't drain as much oil with the Fumoto valves on two different cars. The valve reduces the diameter of the drain hole and more oil is left in the bottom of the pan. Plus, they drain slower. Personally, I think they are only useful if you have a car that is...

So then why not just one oil???

Excuse my ignorance, but why not use the appropriate single weight oil for racing? They don't do cold starts below freezing and probably run very hot almost all the time. Maybe quality single weights don't exist anymore.

Tesla's reputation tanks - Did anyone see this coming?

Tesla sells snake oil called "Full Self-Driving," and then when people get killed says the idiot customers didn't follow the instructions. Seems a bit short sighted to kill off your customers.

Upon which automotive hill will you die?

Another automotive hill I will die on is give me a car with a plain metal key. No chips. No fobs. No keyless entry. I want to be able to go to any hardware or auto store and get three duplicates for like $6 so I always have a backup hidden someplace and an extra and they all just work if they go...

    Interesting conversation at O’Reilly

I grew up near a real old school autoparts store. They could turn your rotors and rebuild your starter in the back of the shop. You could bring in any part and the old guys behind the counter would walk in the back and bring out an exact replacement. They helped me rebuild carbs and keep old...

Upon which automotive hill will you die?

I will never buy a car with autopilot. No accidents in more than 50 years of driving (a lot) and I prefer to be in control.

So then why not just one oil???

Judging from my local Walmart 5w-30 is pretty close to the universal oil with nearly every brand's shelf spot swept clean on a daily basis. It has forced me to buy whatever is available at times and I have recently had to do several mix and match oil changes. Count me in the group that can't...

    Water in gas

If there is significant amounts of water in the gas I would not put it in your vehicles. If it was stored with a good fuel stabilizer like STA-BIL 360 Marine it is probably fine to run it in the boat. A bigger boat should have a fuel/water separator filter like a Racor unit with a glass bowl...

Ford loses 3 billion on EV

I bet the same thing happened when buggy makers first started building cars.

So then why not just one oil???

I could do it with Rotella T6 5w-40, which would work in the motorcycle too. Need the JASO rating for wet clutches. No matter what others say I like a 5w or 0w for winter starts. The motor spins over much easier.

Photo of your parents on their daily walk to school

I took the bus to the first day of kindergarten and said "forget that." Walked or biked to school every day after that through high school, which was two miles away.

Why You Only Hand Tighten an Oil Filter

I use the mechanics torque wrench--my hand. That image is another reason I like to change my own oil. I don't want an air gun anywhere near my drain plug or oil filter. By the way, I have never seen a mechanic in a professional garage use a torque wrench on an oil filter.

Anyone in here have a bike that still has carbs?

As I posted earlier, I have treated all fuel that goes into my outboards, motorcycle, snowblower, and other small engine stuff with STA-BIL 360 Marine Fuel Treatment, and have not had any problems with carbs or starting after storage: no draining, no fuss. All regular E10 gas too. Preferably, a...

Hazards on during heavy rain/snow/low visibility....what say you?

I live where there is "real" winter (upstate NY) and I have never put my wipers up. Start car, run engine, clear snow and defrost. You need to do that anyway before you can drive safely.

When do you use your turn signals?

Yesterday I was screwed because nobody in a left turn only lane was using their turning signals. I was on a three lane road and two lanes had to turn left. I stopped at the back of a line of traffic and had no idea I had to turn left until it was too late. Got funneled into a big shopping center.
