Complete re-do? Front end, 2006 Malibu

If struts - only change the struts If tie rods - only change tie rods If control arms - change everything control arms, tie rods, sway bar links, struts, and a front end alignment. Basically, if your going to do the hard job just do all the easy stuff too.

Financial graphic comparison of buying a new or used car

The graphic is oversimplified, but it's a good point. Be careful about wrapping up your cash flow in a vehicle. The other point i always say is people throw around $5k-$10k upgrades on cars. Lariat is only $9k more than XLT, sport is just $5k more, etc. The brand new one is only $5k more. Not...

How large combo wrenches do shade tree mechanics have

I'm in the same boat. If I need a large wrench I use a knipex pliers wrench, or a mid size Cresent adjustable. If I need really big I have couple pipe wrenches I inherited. They work in a pinch. I often contemplate buying a Bahco 86 and 87 adjustable.

NSFBITOG - 2016 Chevy Tahoe 140k possibly the 1st change

Family member has a neglected tahoe with a 6L80. I helped do a fluid and filter change as band aid. They were quoted to have a new transmission installed, but in general it drives and shifts ok most of the time. Seems overkill to pay $6k for a transmission when it still works. Here is what we...

HELP!! Need something/someone to help organize my home shop

I like to separate materials and tools. The shop is a work area and should have only tools and equipment. Project materials should be warehoused elsewhere. Materials are brought in to do the project then go away. Throw the leftover out or store elsewhere.

Saved co-worker from "I want to buy your car" scam

I have talked to people about scams, banking scams, leaving checks visible, even sending check through the mail. One problem is they think there is some kind of safety net that can fix it or get the money back. Which, there isn't. The bank is kind of watching, but isn't liable. If you give...

Rock Auto Discount code good till June 20th

Never seen it. You have to play the shipping game at RA. For example, it was cheaper to order front and rear brake rotors separately.

Automotive AC troubleshooting 101 - help me get started?

I would wait. I just replaced the compressor on our subaru (Shaft seal failure). The new compressor came pre filled and the kit (rockauto) included a bottle of PAG oil also.

Automotive AC troubleshooting 101 - help me get started?

Be a steward of the environment, and try to avoid venting. This opening scene from Dirty Jobs. I didn't realize it until recently, but that big cloud of white is the guy cutting the refrigerant lines. I wonder if they ever received a visit from the EPA.

Mastercool or Yellow jacket ac gauges

I just poke the Schrader with a small screw driver till a puff comes out. I guess if you had a empty can you could rig a hose with a can tap on each side. Just realized it. You could use that port as the connection for the vacuum pump. This way you can vac the systems, gauges, and hoses.

    Transmission parts issues

I didn't use the video. I found these pdf files on Google. Also here is a link to my post on BITOG showing how I replaced the bearings in a TR580 CVT. https://bobistheoilguy.com/forums/threads/2015-subaru-forester-tr580-cvt-transmission-bearing-replacement.389279/...

    Transmission parts issues

When I was researching rebuilding the TR580 CVT out of our forester I found a slideshow from a webinar detailing the TR580. The webinar is from the Automatic Transmission Rebuilders Association - ATRA. They have a youtube channel. There are a few different sponsors which to me look like parts...

Automotive AC troubleshooting 101 - help me get started?

Yes of course you need to recover the system and not vent refrigerant to the atmosphere. My "shade tree" comment is just about how to pressurize an empty system without sourcing a bottle of nitrogen. In order to do a soap spray test. Shade tree - how to do it with what most people have at home.
