    Valvoline R&P 5W-30, 4K OCI, 2025 Subaru Forester

I'm guessing that a much thinner oil was used the first 1400 miles and that it wasn't all drained very well before the VRP was filled. I don't think (yet) that VRP has a reputation for shearing really fast, so that's the only other explanation I can think of. Either that or it truly is shearing...

    Valvoline vr1 20w-50, 300 miles, Pontiac WS6, LS3 6.2, New motor

Personally, before I did anything else, I'd drain the oil, cut and inspect the filter, replace the oil with the same VR1, run it for 15 min at 2k rpm or so no load and then send in that 15 minute sample to a different lab. Look for sparkly oil or anything metallic in the filter. Especially at...

    Mobil 1 Classic 10w30 (High-Zinc Formula)

By this I mean to say: there's nothing this M1 "high zinc" oil does that a newer Euro mid-to-full SAPS oil doesn't also do and probably do better. I'm guessing this is loads of cheap group 3, a bit of zinc peppered in, and a good bit of profit margin because it needs no testing and has no...

HPL Recommendation... GM 2.0L LTG Turbo

Based on my experience, Carfax also doesn't show nearly totaling out a vehicle.. Had to send back (and eat $800 in shipment costs) are car I bought online that was "clean carfax." But upon arrival it was clear it had been severely damaged and a 20 min only research session showed it had had the...

    Mobil 1 Classic 10w30 (High-Zinc Formula)

I think this oil is a chance for M1 to sell oil based on nostalgia and misinformation about ZDDP because "ever car guy knows" you need high zinc in a flat tappet. You know that saying about fishing lures being designed to catch fishermen more than fish? Seems to apply here.

    M1 0W-40 FS SP 4k mi; BMW 2011 328I 240k mi

It's important to remember that 0w-40 FS is barely a 40 grade. It' right on the bubble, so if it shears even a tiny bit, or gets diluted a tiny bit, it's toast as far as staying a 40 grade.

Minus all the soot dispersant that compromises antiwear performance.

New Dodge Hornets reported as selling 33 percent below MSRP- worth consideration??

Which is likely a factor. People tend to google things from time to time.

Newer Dodge "Ram" trucks with Rust?

Based in my experience firsthand, the reputation goes back to at least the 1967 model year.

Newer Dodge "Ram" trucks with Rust?

The association of Chrysler and Ram trucks with rust LONG predates any FIAT involvement.

Viscosity: Engine protection Vs. enhanced mileage

The official weighting in the EPA test cycle is 55% city, so not hugely biased towards city driving. But, based on the description of the elements of the test cycle, major portions of the city cycle are with cold oil. So the OEMs are often targeting the viscosity at oil temps significantly less...

Are German cars safer than Japanese or American cars?

Which german car? Which Japanese car? Which American car? I think a large S class is still about as safe as it gets. But I wouldn't think it's any safer than a large Lexus LS or a Cadillac.

Switching from 0w-20 to 0w-30 experience

So oil pressure delay, perhaps. My understanding is that the design of their canister mostly traps oil in it, only allowing drainback when the cap is unscrewed as if to service the element. Drainback is not a big deal by itself. What matters is the total volume the oil pump must fill from a...

Switching from 0w-20 to 0w-30 experience

I'm not sure exactly what a "dry start" is in the context of an engine continually bathed in lube oil, but I don't think it's a thing. Excessive oil pressure delay? Sure. Low pressure once the oil arrives? Also possible. But short of draining all the oil or freezing it into a solid block at...

    Latest Makita impact driver testing..

Same. My 18V is powerful enough to break bits, and remove lug nuts with a square drive adapter. I can’t see how more power does anything whatsoever.

    2024 6.7L SO Cummins 38.2k mi; VPBE 7.9k mi

It’s worth mentioning the HVO/RD fuel has lower energy per gallon almost entirely because it is less dense. So each gallon of fuel is actually less MASS of fuel, on the order of 8%-12%. So with no other changes, one could rightly expect a fuel economy loss of about 10%. The fact that you are...

    2024 6.7L SO Cummins 38.2k mi; VPBE 7.9k mi

Renewable diesel is primarily from Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO). It's essentially almost a pure paraffin. That means it has good lubricity and a host of other desirable features (high cetane, good cold properties, etc). But it also means it entirely lacks the lighter aromatic (benzene)...

It might be the single strongest argument for VRP or HPL.

Viscosity: Engine protection Vs. enhanced mileage

He didn't introduce himself and announce his first post. Absent that, I'll assume it's another drive-by-and-ghost and they'll get the same amount of social interaction is give any other ephemeral contact.

Viscosity: Engine protection Vs. enhanced mileage

As I mentioned in my "confessions of a Thickie" thread, I've realized that viscosity is a sufficiency thing. I can afford a bottle of Coke, and so can Jeff Bezos. The fact that he's a bit richer than me doesn't alter the fact that we can both sip cokes. Is the oil thick enough to keep you in...
