What are you working on today?

Unloaded my Sprinter van and listed it for sale. It runs great, but can’t pass MA inspection due to rust. Bummer as 2006 was the last year for minimal emissions controls on the five cyclinder diesel, and the last year for the short (118”) wheelbase. So no easy way to replace it.

    Manufacturing during WW2

Most of the Studebaker US6 6x6 trucks were sent to Russia. They provided the Red Army with superior mobility compared to the Wehrmacht. After the war, the design was copied by several Russian manufacturers, and produced into the 90’s. Because of the danger of the Vladivostok convoys, many were...

Ford GAA 1100 Cubic Inch WW2 Tank Engine

Heinz Guderian harshly criticized Hitler’s decision to build the Pzkw 5 (Panther) and 6 (Tiger), when he could have four Mark 4’s for each, and they were faster and more reliable. He considered the Sherman and long barrel Mark 4’s to be about equal.

Homelite made most of the APU’s for the M4 Sherman and other armored vehicles. This was a favorite feature of the Lend-Lease M4’s sent to the Red Army. Bottom of page. The M1 only got an APU in later M1A2 models. https://www.theshermantank.com/tag/auxiliary-generators/

Story of buying a used bike....

Road tested a DL1000 first. Too much weight on the front wheel to be good on soft dirt. Next bike was a 2009 DL650 ABS. Rode 22K and sold it to a guy in NJ, who rode it four years. Then he sold it to a German tourist who flew into Newark, got a cab to his house, loaded his stuff and toured the...

Story of buying a used bike....

Bought a two year old 2005 Suzuki V-Strom with 93 miles on it. The owner was a shorter guy - about 5’7 - while the V-Strom and other “adventure bikes” tend to have high seats. First bike. On his first ride, he came to an uphill stop sign and dropped the bike, scraping up the plastic fairing...

    Manufacturing during WW2

There is a story behind that as well. Springfield Armory started development of a semi automatic service rifle in the 30’s. Development funds were requested from the Navy/Marine Corps, but they declined. The Army standardized on the Garand in 1937. The Brits, Germans, and USMC believed their...

    Manufacturing during WW2

This is a comprehensive video on the development of the GAA. This video implies Ford copied the Merlin after receiving the blueprints, but this is disputed on several fronts. Ford was the world leader in aluminum casting, and steel casting. Other than being dimensionally similar to the Merlin...

    Manufacturing during WW2

Each generation seems to deride their offspring. The soldiers who fought in Korea, Vietnam, Iraq, and Afghanistan were every bit as tough and dedicated as their forebears.

    Manufacturing during WW2

This does not seem quite correct. Most American (and German) tanks started with aircraft engines. The M2, M3, M4 and M4A1 used the Wright Whirlwind radial engine, This engine was licensed to Continental. It was used in various other armored vehicles as well. The M4A2 used a composite engine by...

    Whats so great about Jeeps?

We have a third generation (1999-2002) 4Runner and many owners are former Jeep owners. That may be bigger and heavier than you want. ATV’s seem to be around 2,000 lbs so easier to pull out.
