    2 UOAs: Mobil 1 10w40+Lucas OS, 7000 & 9000 miles, 2005 Dodge Caravan 3.8L

And, it is possible, that the low UOA indicated wear metals are representative. It's really important to acknowledge that. Sure, coming up with a plausible explanation for how 2 consecutive UOAs showed low indicated wear metals may not be representative is worth considering, and ... the low...

    2 UOAs: Mobil 1 10w40+Lucas OS, 7000 & 9000 miles, 2005 Dodge Caravan 3.8L

@OVERKILL you and I are both referring to what's observed in these UOAs. I personally have not tried to draw anything conclusively from them. I could have been more clear by saying "a possible explanation for the low UOA indicated wear metals" versus "a possible explanation for the low wear"...

    2 UOAs: Mobil 1 10w40+Lucas OS, 7000 & 9000 miles, 2005 Dodge Caravan 3.8L

are you referring to the "wear metals have dropped out of suspension" theory? or the "wear possibly could have been reduced by increased viscosity" theory? fwiw - I was responding to @OVERKILL s theory, not ignoring it. The idea that "all the wear metals and contaminants are sitting in areas...

    2 UOAs: Mobil 1 10w40+Lucas OS, 7000 & 9000 miles, 2005 Dodge Caravan 3.8L

fwiw - another explanation for low wear in these higher viscosity UOAs could possibly be “in some applications and in some operating conditions increasing viscosity reduces wear”.

    2 UOAs: Mobil 1 10w40+Lucas OS, 7000 & 9000 miles, 2005 Dodge Caravan 3.8L

Fwiw - the 9000 mile UOA was in more harsh conditions and received more make-up Lucas. The 7000 mile UOA more normal operating conditions, less make-up Lucas, less dilution, 50 weight viscosity, and also low wear. It seems like if this were true the wear metal numbers in the next UOA would be...

    2 UOAs: Mobil 1 10w40+Lucas OS, 7000 & 9000 miles, 2005 Dodge Caravan 3.8L

Probably 2-3 quarts of Lucas were added as make-up oil over the 9000 road trip. The minivan ultimate generally doesn’t use that much make up oil, but it was seriously overloaded and working hard through deserts and up and over mountain passes. The tin is curious, and it disappeared on the next...

    2 UOAs: Mobil 1 10w40+Lucas OS, 7000 & 9000 miles, 2005 Dodge Caravan 3.8L

Some UOAs I realized I hadn't shared: The first 9000 mile UOA was when my family super-overloaded our minivan ultimate with 3 kids, our dog, my wife and I, 5 bicycles and camping and cooking gear and we drove across and all around the country for a little more than 5 weeks. The oil became super...

Rotella T4 15w40 + Lucas Oil Stabilizer, Fram TG Filter, ~2000 mile OCI in a 1993 Corvette

Agreed! In the 1st post I noted the deformity in the airbox and shared a video (also below) on how I’ve hopefully resolved that issue. Also I switched from a K&N filter to a OEM. In addition to all the ways @dnewton3 explained that trends and baselines are important - when you see elevated Si...

Rotella T4 15w40 + Lucas Oil Stabilizer, Fram TG Filter, ~2000 mile OCI in a 1993 Corvette

It is a good UOA. Objectively. Generally, we discuss what could be contributing factors of bad (and good) UOAs.

@TiGeo so when someone is clearly *not* overstating the value of single UOA, and qualifies their theory …

Rotella T4 15w40 + Lucas Oil Stabilizer, Fram TG Filter, ~2000 mile OCI in a 1993 Corvette

@KEVINK0000 my theory (and this is just a theory) is that great filtration (Fram TG 20 micron) paired with a relatively thick oil film (18.1cSt) protected the metals. "Any abrasive particles equal to or larger than the oil film thickness will cause wear." Of course one UOA is just an anecdotal...

    Rotella T4 15w40 + Lucas in a 93 Corvette Autocross Race Car

We pledge allegiance, to 5w30 … (on page 10 of this thread and forevermore) Fwiw - before I started this thread all of my Corvettes were on 18cSt. In the original post I said “I'm thinking I'll just go with Mobil 1 15w50 and no additive”. I also have some Supercar 5w50 on the shelf and if I...

    Rotella T4 15w40 + Lucas in a 93 Corvette Autocross Race Car

Sharing the story of the car and the prior owner’s oil strategy. Followed it up with a UOA in another post. Since the prior owner used Lucas I knew that would get everyone’s panties in a bunch. Reliably, it did. And, the UOA was excellent. Good fun.

When we know with 100% certainty that the 30 weight was only prescribed to meet a CAFE target - yes.

    Rotella T4 15w40 + Lucas in a 93 Corvette Autocross Race Car

Fwiw - I haven’t posed a question. I’m not doing a search. I don’t - the 5w30 army is just alarming. I get the anti-Lucas army. [I will say that if anyone had compelling application specific data that proved Corvette, Lingenfelter, Callaway and Mobil wrong I would absolutely consider it.]

    Rotella T4 15w40 + Lucas in a 93 Corvette Autocross Race Car

UOA for the oil is in the UOA section. Si was high likely due to the K&N filter and slight deformation of the air filter mounting surface on the airbox. Wear metals we’re still really low, likely because the good 20 micron oil filtration and oil film thickness...

    Rotella T4 15w40 + Lucas in a 93 Corvette Autocross Race Car

what's interesting to me is that sooooo many folks here are recommending 5w30 over a heavier oil for this application. the Corvette Development Team Leader said heavier is better, 30 weight is for fuel economy optimization Lingenfelter used heavier (10w40) Callaway used heavier (15w50) and...
