Video - Engineering Explained, Do Thin Oils Destroy Engines?

I think right comparison isn't BMEP, but the load/area of the bearings in the the connecting rods? Diesel engines run way higher BMEP than many turbo gas engines, at much lower rpm, but the bearings are also built for that, but they aren't putting 0W8 in them yet either. More useful would be...

    Transmission parts issues

This guy seems to find subaru CVT's pretty repairable at least. I guess shops that do these aren't super common but they are out there.

    Societal addiction to phones

I guess it depends on the community? To let your kid loose you have to trust that there are more good neighbors than bad, and hope that your kid and their friends aren't going to do anything too stupid... In my little town, some kids do roam unsupervised, and mostly without causing too...

HELP!! Need something/someone to help organize my home shop

Yep, not too bad! Add some more shelving on the bare walls maybe with some standardized large bin capacity? Maybe 8-10 bins? Get rid of about 10% of the loose stuff, shelve the rest, see what that looks like? I won't post my garage/workshop/junk storage/drive shed!

HELP!! Need something/someone to help organize my home shop

Maybe get some graph paper and plot out your floor plan to make things fit/accessible. If it doesn't work on paper then decide what you are going to keep, and what goes. I have similar problems! Too many mechanical hobbies/toys, projects, tools, and "spares"/parts that come in handy just after...

    Mower deck spindles

I think you are right, not worth messing around with, for some bearings that last a long time as is.

Parking pawl damage when raising car with auto trans?

If both are in the air, they will counter rotate even in Park. I had a lesson on why brakes are put on all 4 wheels with my 4wd tractor, when I was driving down a muddy hilly, and let off the HST pedal which brakes the diffs, and watched in amazement as the tires start counter rotating, the 2...

    Tires on Porsche Macan

I think Michelin standard for summer tires, is don't even touch them below -7C, the rubber is effectively frozen and will crack with any flexing. I've seen a couple "shattered" tires autocross tires come out in the spring, from someone dropping them in the winter in their garage when moving...

    Belt shredding?

That's what it looks like to me too. Have the ribbed profiles on belts/pulleys been standardized across all manufacturers for a long time? I wonder if a pulley has a slightly different profile? With that much stuff flying off of it, maybe run it in the dark with a bright flashlight and see if...

No pistons, no cylinders, no logic: This engine is so futuristic that it shouldn’t even run

Maybe in the US as it seems lobbyists can be pretty effective? But in many other countries, where oil and fossil fuels are just expensive energy to import, any potentially cost effective technology to reduce oil imports is going to get some investigation and likely good attention from many...

Who here double times their oil filter?

I find the "good one" tokyo roki, is about half to 3 quarters full of oil in it after a couple minutes. Frams have not much left. Overnight I doubt any are holding much oil? The car always has a moment of timing chain rattle on the first start of the day with any filter. The Outback gets a new...

Off-duty police chief in PA suspended after pulling gun on motorcyclist

You are right, maybe the rider missed a pedestrian by a foot at 90mph... Why the chief lost his temper isn't really a factor legally anyway. But, it looks like the kid on the bike had no idea that someone could be chasing him? Why would he spend a couple minutes parking his bike so carefully...

    CPU possibly thermal throttling.

Something is a bit weird with your lap top I think, when mine throttles it only drop the rate from 120+ to 80's where it sits? I only play war thunder which isn't much of a load. Have a look on youtube how tricky it is open up your laptop, and apply some new paste. My old Asus ROG laptop...

    Lock car at night

I guess removing pointless noise is good thing... But seems a bit excessive to expect that kind of silence in a neighborhood? Closing a car door would be similar. I suppose if they are a light sleeper with their window open, a chirp at 11pm would be annoying. You could change the settings...

Video- you probably won't make it in Wyoming

I think I could handle living in/near the mountains of Wyoming, like near Jackson, and ski/bike/hike year round. Moving out into the flatter parts of the state or Cheyenne doesn't make a lot of sense to me anyways.

    2018 Forester 2.5L 70k miles: PM Suggestions?

I've done most of the tire swaps on my car, and haven't had to replace any, but if you try to zip them off fast with the impact with lots of rust on the threads, they do tend to catch and want to gall, and if the tire monkey keeps hammering them off at full speed, then they tend to strip or...

Would you eat "lab grown" meat?

I'm not really against eating it. Never had any though. Many of the industrial meat production practices aren't really worth keeping either IMO, and I believe the meat processing industry relies on terrible working conditions to keep prices low, isn't really a great thing either. If we had...

    2018 Forester 2.5L 70k miles: PM Suggestions?

CVT fluid? I think you had to change it before 60k to get the 100k warranty on it, but it would be worth doing now anyways. Coolant, brake juice too. Our Outback seems to just go with some regular maintenance. It seems so far all the components they used are decent quality.

Best shocks for cushy ride in half ton truck

Good point with the bushing sizes, that helps. I would never guess bilstien would give a "cushy" ride, but I guess some damping is needed to control a live rear axle. I would go to a GM truck forum and ask there TBH. I like kyb and the rear shocks on my Focus do seem to offer a controlled...
