Oil and Filte for 2001 Volkswagen Jetta 1.8 Turbo?

LOL Yep, wavinwayne, I missunderstood. The upper end weight ... I wonder about not going above 40 either 10W-30 or 10W-40 tops.

could someone answer this..settle a bet...

It has nothing to do with me selling Amsoil, it had to do with what I read here from a link on one of the administrators about motor oil written by Dr. A.E. Haas.

Perhaps a read on this page about Synthetic and VI improvers... http://63.240.161.99/motoroil/102.html As for "W" meaning "winter" read this info. This was stated by SAE Engineers. http://63.240.161.99/motoroil/107.html

Newbie with Volvo (nee VW 2.4L) - what oil? CF?

Don't be hung up on the 10W-30 bit. 0W-30, 5W-30 and even 10W-30 are all the same for running temps of 212 F where viscoity is around 10 cSt at 100 C. On the 0W-30 or the 5W-30 it just means it is easier for your engine to turn over after it has completely cooled down and the flow of oil will...

could someone answer this..settle a bet...

Sorry Ron and Bruce, you are both wrong. Synthetic has NO Viscoisity Improvers, only Dino. Synthetic starts life as a certain viscoity upper grade to be at 10 cSt @ 212 degrees and when it cools it drops down to around that lower number to represent cold cranking indexes. Dino oil is thinned to...

Oil and Filte for 2001 Volkswagen Jetta 1.8 Turbo?

Don't worry about the 0W-30 German Castrol or the 5W-30 Mobil 1. They are great oils. HOWEVER, I would never recommend 30W-50 in that engine. It does not have the flow at start up temps, especially if you are anywhere that the starting temps are below 75 degrees F. I think Dr. AE Haas would also...

    5w30 instead of 5w20 - bad idea?

I agree with Nickdfresh, you should wait for summer to put in that 5W-30. It's the top end weight that will be the issuse, not really the bottom end, but because you are using basically the 5W regardless of the top number, the oil will be more flowable at the lower start up temps on the 5W-20...

    Syn better at low temps?

Matt89, you might also read (lengthy) what AE Haas has to say about motor oils in general. At here: http://63.240.161.99/motoroil/index.html You can also find this link elsewhere on this forum, lised by one of the administrators. He did extensive studies and put it into more common terms so we...

Oil and Filte for 2001 Volkswagen Jetta 1.8 Turbo?

Have you looked at the Auto Zone parts stores? That is the only place I am aware of that handles it. All our AZ stores out here have some but some have the "German" gold and some have the "German" "European Formula" as well. I think the GC Gold is a bit better myself, but I'm feeling that...

    I have a newbie ques.

Yes, Blackstone is a good lab to have sampling done. WOW! You found some of the GREEN GC huh? I found some distantly in Ft. Collins CO, and had my cousin buy it for me and ship it out. Paid him for the oil and shipped him some wine for his trouble. *S* I keep watching stores around here, but...

    Return Flow Rate?

By the time you visit 5 bars you won't remember you even HAD oil ... what oil?? LOL Well, you mean around 72.52 PSI I would imagine. Good oil pressure btw.

    Amsoil 5w-30 Bottle Label

Might be even better. Some say that the SM was more for ecological reasons on the cat rather than a significant improvement of lube.

    wierd Q

One time...LONG time ago (in a Galaxy far far away) I had changed my oil, changed my filter and put in the oil. All 5 quarts that it was supposed to take. Checked the dipstick like I always do before I start up. It generally ALWAYS shows quite a bit over the Full mark because of the new filter...

    GC in Toyotas

German Castrol should be just fine. The 0W just means it is a bit more conducive for cold weather starting. Not too much difference in 5W and 0W when GC is the oil. I mean, the 30 weight is the top end viscosity that will be there when the motor is well warmed up and at operating temps. I've...

    GC for Cummins diesels?

New twist. My boss, the guy that writes the checks (at least oks the writing of the checks) told me the other day he doesn't believe in synthetics. This was during a conversation over some ISO 220 Industrial gearbox grease that we can get local and they quoted us the ISO220 in conventional (a...
