LSjr Tests VOA of 20 yr old Valvoline & 40 yr old Mobil 1 Oil. HPL tests Anti-Foam in Gear Oil.

Just to clarify, water does not oxidize an ester but can hydrolyze the ester, that is, reverse the esterification reaction producing alcohol and acid. That said, it should be noted that it takes severe conditions to make a POE, like reaction temperatures of 220°C to 250°C, and likewise takes...

LSjr Tests VOA of 20 yr old Valvoline & 40 yr old Mobil 1 Oil. HPL tests Anti-Foam in Gear Oil.

There are deposits and there are deposits. The original question from Invisible was what esters can break down carbon deposits and dissolve them. Elemental carbon is not soluble, but some resins and lacquers that hold the carbon deposits in place could be dissolved or loosened by polar...

LSjr Tests VOA of 20 yr old Valvoline & 40 yr old Mobil 1 Oil. HPL tests Anti-Foam in Gear Oil.

I am retired 17 years, so I don't know who is their current supplier. Esters do not break down or dissolve carbon deposits, but highly polar esters can slowly dissolve some types of deposits. Their main cleanliness benefit is preventing deposits by dissolving or suspending the precursors to...

LSjr Tests VOA of 20 yr old Valvoline & 40 yr old Mobil 1 Oil. HPL tests Anti-Foam in Gear Oil.

I can't speak to a specific product, but foam can be caused by many trace materials. A common anti-foam additive is silicone which, while not soluble, can be dispersed as micro droplets that change the surface tension of the oil and prevent foaming. Over time these micro droplets can plate out...

    Low carb vegetables

I freeze dozens of eggplant parm dinners-for-two each year, but I don't fry the eggplant. Instead I peel three large eggplant, slice them laterally into 1/4" rounds, paint one side of each round with extra virgin olive oil, and stack them four layers deep on a large plate. I then microwave...

LSjr Tests VOA of 20 yr old Valvoline & 40 yr old Mobil 1 Oil. HPL tests Anti-Foam in Gear Oil.

Lubricant grade esters typically have a TAN of <0.05 (<0.03 for Hatco). They do not contribute to the TAN of virgin motor oils, but could contribute to used oils if a lot of water and heat is present. This is rare, and the acids released when is does occur are much milder than the acids from...

LSjr Tests VOA of 20 yr old Valvoline & 40 yr old Mobil 1 Oil. HPL tests Anti-Foam in Gear Oil.

The Mobil 1 of the 70s was based on PAO and POE. If I recall correctly the POE content was 10-20% With the SF version in 1980 they switched to a diester (Ditridecyl Adipate). Hatco did not supply the ester to Mobil as they made their own - we determined the ester type and quantity by gas...

    Do You Garden?

Been growing vegetables for 50 years. Current garden is 50' x 50' wrapped in an 8' deer fence with chicken wire added on the bottom 1.5' and underground another 1.5' to block groundhogs and rabbits. Full sun and heavily mulched with grass clippings. Crops this year will include garlic (450)...

    Low carb vegetables

When I'm doing very low carbs for weight control my vegetables are fresh lettuces & spinach, broccoli, cauliflower, mushrooms, eggplant, asparagus, and green beans. I also allow some smaller quantities of onions, peppers, garlic, and tomatoes. I avoid foods that are sweet or starchy.

    Mistaken identity on a plane

Some 20 years ago I was vacationing in Ireland with my late wife and her girlfriend. A one point I was down on a knee reading something when my wife stepped in front of me, so I gave her a friendly slap on the butt. Of course it was not my wife, but her girlfriend. We all had a good laugh and...

    Synthetic Esters with Siegfried Lucazeau

Very well done. A basic Ester 101 course but one with which I find no fault, and that is very rare! :) Mr. Lucazeau clearly has an in-depth knowledge of esters and presents well. And yes refrigeration is the largest application for POEs by volume, followed by jet engine oils.

Anyone actually have good service from a late model Nissan with CVT?

My 2019 Altima has 45,400 miles with no issues whatsoever. My last car was a 2008 Altima with a CVT and also had no issues over the 130,000 miles I put on it. This in spite of the fact that I live in the mountains with Dolly Parton roads (hills & curves) and never added or changed the CVT oil.

Refrigeration Oils (Home/Commercial) What makes them so special/expensive?

Synthetic motor oils are based on synthetic hydrocarbons which are not miscible with HFCs. POEs (yes polyol esters) are polar molecules containing oxygen and are miscible with all refrigerants. Most POE refrigeration oils have little or no additives and are ashless, as opposed to motor oils...

Do You Make Homemade Chili Powder?

I use ground beef, cooked in a frying pan like a huge hamburger and then broken up to give fairly large chunks, about 1/2". My spice mix pretty much negates any taste nuances from the beef so I go for texture, although smoked beef sounds interesting. Since I do not have a smoker (yet), a few...

Do You Make Homemade Chili Powder?

I grow poblano peppers, pick them red, dry them in a dehydrator, and grind them into ancho power. When making chili I combine the ancho with cumin seeds, oregano, garlic powder, and a dash of allspice. The other ingredients in the chili are beef and home grown onions, bell peppers, garlic...

    Pulled over - odd reason!

In Virginia there is no legal requirement to present your permit or even to inform LE that you are carrying unless they ask. Still it is a courteous thing to do when carrying, and I have.

removing old bumper sticker from textured plastic

I have found odorless candle & lamp oil to be very effective in removing residual glue, and being non-polar liquid wax paraffins shouldn't affect the plastic surface. Of course it depends on the nature of the residue, so you may want to try a polar solvent first like isopropyl alcohol.

    Pulled over - odd reason!

Just to clarify, we had two drinks each over a three plus hour period, so we were well well below the limit. Even the deputy noted that she was driving fine, and said he was okay with a few mph over the limit. His sole stated cause for the stop was the sudden slowing when we saw the deer, and...

    Pulled over - odd reason!

So the wife and I are cruising on home after a night of dinner, drinking, and dancing at our local roadhouse. Mrs lead-foot is at the wheel of her little Mitsubishi Eclipse five speed V6, but after her last ticket (#5) she finally took a lesson from me and was using cruise control, a safe 60 in...
