    No dipstick

VW does this with the automatic transmission on the TDI, so how exactly is this a domestic issue?

    GC and Mazda HLAs (YAGCT*)

I have a '96 Mazda Miata with the 1.8L DOHC I-4 which is quite famous for HLA noise upon cold start-up. I was using Mobil 1 5W-30 and 10W-30 when I first got the car. I decided to try German Castrol and its been in for about 1,000 miles now. With the Mobil 1, I'd get HLA noise when the oil had...

Extended highway speed = oil usage.

I had beem using 10W30 Mobil 1 until winter. Mazda engines are famous for HLA noise I know, but there was extended HLA noise on cold starts with the 10W30. I switched to 5W30 and no HLA noise, even on cold startup. It used the same amount of oil even with the 10W30. I haven't checked the EGR...

Extended highway speed = oil usage.

I have a '96 Miata which I've been trying to track down a problem. I got it with 124,000 miles on it, previous history largely unknown. I have a 120-mile a day commute, and it hadn't been using any oil between changes. 12 miles of said commute is at 70MPH, the rest is 60-65MPH. The problem...

What can I do with a bucket of used oil?

    Blue SuperTech?

I was at Wal-Mart last night picking up some oil, and the only SuperTech filter they had for my application was one that had been on the shelf for some time. Instead of the black case, it was a blue case with a label affixed to it. Construction looked similar to the other SuperTechs I've seen, I...

Mazda 1.8L, M1, and Texas "Winter"

I put winter in quotes because it isn't much of a winter compared to the rest of the country. I have a '96 Mazda Miata with a 1.8L DOHC and I've been using 10W-30 Mobil 1 SS ever since I purchased the car. It has 130,000 miles on it now, I got it with 124,000 miles. I have no idea what was in...

    GL5, Synthetic and Syncros

I've seen some posts on other forums (especially Subaru forums) regarding the use of GL5 rated gear oil in manual transmissions. There are people making claims that the sulfur in the oil eats the brass syncros in the transmission. They also advise against synthetic as it doesn't "stick" to the...

'96 Miata Tranny and Diff Oil

The only reason I'm a bit paranoid is the car has 128,000 miles on it. It has been very well taken care of, but I didn't get any records for it. I've already replaced the timing belt since it is overdue (every 60,000 miles) and wanted to get some fresh gear oil in just in case it still has the...

'96 Miata Tranny and Diff Oil

I called Redline, and they have one in Plano and one in Fort Worth. The FTW dealer closes before I could make it over there today. I do plan to purchase the oil from the FTW dealer, as its only 50 cents more than an online dealer, which is easily eaten up by shipping costs. The transmission...

'96 Miata Tranny and Diff Oil

I just bought a '96 Miata and I'm getting ready to change the transmission and differential oil. The miata.net forums recommend Redline oils, but I'm doing it this weekend and that's not enough leadtime to locate it. Is there another readily available (read: Wal-Mart, Auto Zone, O'Reilly Auto)...

Pennsylvania grade crude = superior base stock?

Quaker State moved from Oil City, PA to Irving, TX (after 93 years). Last I heard, they were using oil from Louisiana, which is part of the reason they moved down here. I saw Kendall GT-1 oil at Auto Zone in Decatur, TX last week.

Why don't transmission pans have drain plugs?

To all the people complaining about balancing a pan full of transmission fluid: have you tried loosening the pan bolts one end at a time? I have a rather large oil drain pan, and loosen all the pan bolts, and remove the bolts at one end of the pan. The weight of the fluid will push that side...

    OHC engines and oil viscosity

These are also engines with timing belts instead of chains. The Ford 4.6L SOHC and DOHC use chains, and the tensioners use oil pressure to pump themselves up. Not to mention to get from the pan to the heads in the DOHC motor, the oil has to travel four feet.

    Extended Drains 101

What is the reasoning behind recommending the use of fuel injector cleaner? Unless you use some bargain basement gas, the additive package in major gasolines does a good job. I see many people here warn against the use of oil additives saying that the manufacturer's additive package shouldn't...
