    Crush washer torque

How do you use a torque wrench on an oil drain plug when you're using a copper (or any metal) crush washer. Any time I've used them (often) the resistance from the pre-crushed metal seems high enough to completely throw off the torque reading. That you might get a reading that was spec for the...

    TOYOTA OIL DRAIN PLUG GASKET

OCI's every 3500 miles (at one time years ago every 1500 with filter every 3000, but that was a bit much, although car ran over 205,000 miles with only oc's, tune ups, and a starter) but changed oil and filters maybe 400 times over 65 years. Never had a leak or a stuck or stripped plug from...

Transmission Fluid: How much over is overfill?

Limited knowledge here, but I believe there two types of extractors: electric, hook up to battery, run narrow tube down dip stick tube, and go; second type-easier and cheaper-hand pump (pump out, or pull up and create suction). Same process, run thin tube down dip stick tube and suck out small...

    Radiator hose indentation

The original pliers were what they used to call "water pump" pliers-channel locks-which are the ones that caused the problem. Half way through the job I got smart and bought a proper pair of radiator hose clamp pliers.

Proper use of "They're, there, and their"

They're getting married in Europe because it's cheaper over there, and they're having their car shipped over.

Longevity of fluids left in containers

Does anyone have any knowledge/opinions on the advisability of leaving various auto fluids in their containers for long periods of time, eg: motor oil, transmission fluid, power steering fluid, brake fluid, anti freeze. Brake fluid I believe is a problem as it absorbs water?, but I would like...

Thank you all for your replies. BTW, it is an OEM Nissan hose, although made in Mexico, but probably better than aftermarket.

    Radiator hose indentation

I recently noticed what I thought was a leak in a lower radiator hose (06 Nissan Altima 4 cyl)-turned out to be a rusted and corroded clamp which broke apart as soon as I touched it with pliers. So bought two new upper and lower hoses, and clamps, and proceeded to change radiator hoses for the...

Those with 150,000 miles or more, check in

'06 Altima-no cvt. Conventional auto 4 spd transmission. every two years (approx 20,000-24,000 miles) pan plug drain (about two qts out and in) then flush from transmission cooler line 2 qts at a time (2 out, 2 in) till about 10 or 12 quarts replaced. No problems at all-shifts like a new...

What is the most you have spent on repairs, relative to the value of the car?

Recently spent $1400 for lower BJ's and 4 tires on my 1989 Camry rust bucket with electric door locks that occasionally go crazy and lock me in. The passenger side usually works, so I drag my 85 year old self across the console/shifter, and go out the passenger door. Once that didn't work...

    Bolt stretch

Thank you all. I try to restrain myself, but I guess I'm one of those customers they would want to charge $250 per hour!

    Bolt stretch

Having the usual "brake job' tire repair/replacement, anything that requires the wheels coming off" problems with over-zealous "mechanics" with impact guns. Try to retorque lugs when I get home, but I live in NYC and it's kind of cold for driveway work, and sometimes you can't even get the lugs...

pulley size and "high output" alternators

Recently reading about what are being called "high output" alternators, the ads for which recommend against changing the small pulleys they come with, and also indicate that you need to purchase a shorter belt to compensate for the smaller pulley size. Some folks on this site are talking about...

    tire inflators

NOCO has an auto shut-off which seems pretty accurate-I think against my Etenwolfe guage, within a pound or two. Don't know which one is right, but close enough. "Good enough for government."
