MTF doesn't mention Mercon compatibility, and ART specifically says do not use in transmissions requiring Mercon.

Yes, but my question is WHY does Ford say use ATF and can I use a thin gear oil like Redline 70w80 instead?
I suppose I could use AMSOIL ATD Torque-Drive fluid.

Amsoil IS a name brand. It's the FIRST full synthetic auto oil in existence, been around since 1972. THREE YEARS before Mobil 1 came along.
If you really want us to suggest what oil is "best" for your application, don't be so closed minded on the oil choices out there.

Amsoil retail prices are definitely high compared to other synthetics out there. It's hard to compete with Mobil 1 and Wal-Mart.
