Of course they recommend a year. Its not a must... The oil doesn't have feelings or know if its been in there 20 days or 20 months. They sell 5x as much in 5 years if you change it. No skin off their tail to recommend that,

If it's relatively clean would put a modern oil and new Wix filter in it and forget it, add some if it was needed.

Plenty of damage by DIY types. Not limited to quick lubes. They not all dopes, got a bud manage one for a while and a smart guy. But certainly think the damage to air filters a reality. Some of the housings are real fussy and can seem right or tite and not installed correctly. Took over service...
