Well it cost a lot less than that in qty. But you have a point. The Audi only takes 6 liters and barely uses 1/2 liter in between changes. My 993 has twice the capacity and drinks a lot more oil. So I use the very decent Mobil 1 Diesel Truck 5W40 in that.
All the older UOAs on this report are the same Motul 300V 5W40, except the last one, which is Mobil 1 0W40. The Audi twin turbo engine is chipped and runs oil temps up to about 260° in warm weather.
Was the T&SUV version SL? Was it older stock? Who knows? I'd like to believe this VOA was an anomaly, but with all the "green" reformulating going on, you never know what you get one month to the next.
From earlier VOAs and UOAs, I thought Delvac1 has more Phosphorous and Zinc. Here's the result of a VOA from last Fall I never posted. Also included photos of the bottle. Is this different Delvac1?
I've been doing some reading on the web trying to make sense of what's what among Mobil1 gear oils.
Data points:
1) Porsche factory fill (possibly) in newer models and what they use in racing gearboxes (definitely) is Mobil1 SHC.
2) Porsche and Subaru owners have reported problems when using...
I'm running the Motul Gear 300 now. I'm confident that it's doing a brilliant job protecting the 'box, but the slightly stiffer shift feel compared to stock leads me to wonder if the stock oil really is lighter weight.
I was thinking of trying Specialty Forumlations MTL-P which is both GL-5 and...
Hmmm. Referring to the shop manual, Subaru only recommends 80 weight gear oil for ambient temperatures under 86°F.
However, any GL-5 85 weight gear oil does meet their spec for higher temps.
That's what I was thinking.
I used to have an aftermarket turbocharged 2.5RS with the fragile 5-speed. I lived in daily fear of shearing the teeth off 1st or 2nd.
Now with the "indestructible" STI gearbox, which gets syncro problems but has little chance of breaking teeth, a lighter gear oil...
Apparently, Subaru has recommended a special, lightweight 75W80 gear oil for manual transmissions that have "beat the syncro" shifting problems. The part number is K0323F0091.
My basic understanding of gear oils is that putting a 75W80 in place of the usual 75W90 or 80W90 may provide better...
