    Declining DIY Market

I've done my own oil changes since I first bought a car (1969) and still do. My 2 sons and my son-in-law do theirs also. We're cheap I guess.

Cold engine noise with Amsoil 0w30 in a Toyota 3.5

I used SSO in my Prius for the last 2 years, 16,000 mi drain interval. I had no problems but did begin to notice a bit of noise at cold start. Just went back to Mobil 1 0w-30 and it is now very quiet all the time. I have heard that Toyotas seem to like Mobil 1 and there might be something to it.

    hybrids and oil

I've got an 04 Prius with 116,000 mi. on it. I've used Amsoil SSO for the last 2 years with once a year oil and filter change, about 18,000 mi. per year. Oil use has been about .5 quart between changes and the car runs great. 45 mpg average, mostly highway miles. Toyotas are fond of synthetic...

    Amsoil SSO, 5000 KM's in...............

I've switched over to SSO in my 04 Prius at 84,000 miles. I've used Mobil 1 5w-30 since 1000 miles with 5k OCI until I reached 60k, then went to 10k OCI. My observations so far - engine is quieter and seems to run smoother. SSO hasn't been in long enough to get decent data on MPG. I'm planning...

A gimmick that I said would happen!

My hybrid can't use the stuff but my wife's 07 RAV4 calls for 0w20 in the 2.4L 4 cyl.

    Should I buy a Hybrid?

I've got 61k on my 04 and not a single problem, averaging 50mpg with 75% interstate/25% city driving. Design of the car makes it especially appealing - I can haul a load of 8 ft. 2x4s with the hatch closed. Do that with a Corolla or Civic? Since I average 20k per year, I think it was the right...

    Hybrid cars

Don't dismiss the Prius economy at high speeds. Made a trip 2 weeks ago moving my son to Kansas. We took I-70 across from Columbus OH to Topeka KS at speeds always in excess of 70 mph. My round trip mileage was 50.9 - not bad in my opinion. As with all cars models, some get better mileage than...

    Hybrid cars

I think people who generalize that the 'long term costs' of a hybrid are going to be higher have no basis in fact to what they are saying. I have 57k on my Prius and it has not cost me a dime in any repairs. My dad has a LeSabre that has less than 30k on it, and because it is over 3 years old...

A.O. Smith Water heaters the best???

Been 'tankless' since 1983 raising 3 kids with loads of showers and laundry. Ours is a Paloma from Japan. Never ran out of hot water and would never consider a 'tank'. It is a natural gas unit.

    wood stove

If you get a proper installation, there should be no problems at all. Our insurance agent (Erie Ins.) said they were much more in favor of a home with an insert installed than with an open fireplace. Go to www.hearth.com to learn more about wood burning stoves.

Will GM Dump Saab and Hummer???

GM should dump Hummer, Saab, eliminate Buick and Pontiac, and start building good, fuel efficient cars. Wife had a Chevy Cobalt rental while her Corolla was being fixed after an accident. If this is meant to compete with the Corolla, GM better fire the engineering crew that came up with it and...

Who's more responsible for the decline in of the big 3: Union or Management?

Management is responsible for GM's mess, but the American workforce isn't what it used to be either. When I went into the apprenticeship program at the local GE plant back in 1969, we worked a full 8 hour day (sometimes more) then went to night school for 3 or 4 hours 4 days a week. Not many...

Those Who Change Their Own Oil - check in

Always have, always will. Got Rhino ramps from my daughter and her husband 2 years ago but before that just length of 2x8 and a cement block to get it off the ground a bit.
