I'm still on the original battery for our Miata, which rolled off the factory floor in Hiroshima in December 1999 and some 85K miles ago. The battery is trunk-mounted. I don't know if there's any correlation, but it is something to think about.

I supply my own oil and filter as well; the Suzuki shop charged me $12.69 (Canadian loonies). Not bad, seeing as how the quick-change places want to charge me the full price whether or not I supply my own oil and filter.

I'd go with door #1.
I've used Kendall GT-1 Full Syn in the Miata in the past and it seemed like a great oil at a great price. I would use any of their oils in a heartbeat. For your OCIs, I'm sure the Champion filter would work just fine as well.
Again, unscientific, but that would be my...
Or German Castrol 0W-30. While I don't live in the desert, my Miata loves this oil. It may be a bit thicker at the hot end than many XW-30s as well.

I'm interested in Canadian availability for the new Pennzoil "Yellow Bottle" conventional and Pennzoil Gold syn blend. When can we expect to see it on the shelves up here (or is it already here and I'm just not looking in the right place )?
Thanks for doing this for us - a great idea and...
I haven't used the Ultimate, but I did run the GT-1 Full Synthetic in the Miata and my SER SpecV with absolutely no issues. I would still use it if I had a source of it here in Calgary.
YMMV, but I would use it with confidence.

I'll be taking delivery of a new Suzuki Grand Vitara with the 3.2 litre V6 very shortly. I think the manual calls for 5W-30. Any recommendations on what oil works best in this engine?

Stick with either the Valvoline or give GC a try. My SpecV likes 5W-30 Syntec as well (although I don't like Castrol's advertisements). It seems the QR25DE likes thinner oils at startup, especially in cold weather.
Good luck!

Your opinions on how the PC 0W-30 would stack up against GC would be interesting. I've used the 5W-30 in the past and thought it was great oil. I'm currently on a GC kick, but I'll switch back once my stash is gone if the PC product is just as good.
Or would the Duron 0W-40 be closer to GC?
