Just a quick note for you. The rear main seal can be changed easily with the engine in place. Drop the oil pan, pull the rear-most bearing cap and the two piece seal can be pushed out. Bolt it all back up and your good for another 150K.

I have always drilled a small hole at both the high and low positions (if not already there} in any t-stat I have installed for that reason as well as retaining some (albeit small) flow at all times. As far as I know it has never worked against me.
