I have had a 2005 Pontiac GTO with the 400 HP LS2 engine for little over a year now. The manual calls for Mobil1 5W-30 that meets GM spec: GM4718M. It's the same oil specified for the new Corvettes. Makes sense as the same engine is used in both cars.

LT4 Vette I tried 0w30, 5w30, Amsoil, GC, Motorcraft...was same with all.

My 2005 GTO LS2 has no piston slap whatsoever. I use Mobil 5W30. FYI: My last car was an 04 Mustang GT 4.6...that thing had the worst piston slap until warm...was sort of embarassing.

I tried the "highly rated" GC in my 2002 Mustang GT. Only used it for approximately 500 miles before going back to M1 0W-20. I have no dyno figures to back it up, but car seemed little down on power , throttle response not as crisp, etc. Also, idle RPM dropped +/- 300 RPM. Wonder just how many...

Anybody know which Mobil 1 has more moly...0W-20 or 0W-30?

Although I have tried the search function, I still would appreciate a relatively non-technical explanation re what exactly Total Base Number consists of, and, why is it so important?

I am firmly hooked on this forum and read "everything". What I would like to see is a glossary of the terms used in VOA and UOA..along with such info as is a higher or lower number in a specific category or better. FYI: I did do a search on the forums and could not find a glossary. Any help will...
