    Castrol GTX 5W20 - 25,056Miles - 07 Galant ES 2.4L

The expected wear would be 37, based on universal averages. This would be the base of comparison for the extra wear. It appears you used actual wear of 60 as the base.

GM OLM dropping fast in cold !

Yeah, the OLM does not directly measure the quality of the oil. I have fun with the percentages, though. I like to see how they change under different driving conditions. Have done some UOAs well before hitting zero for baseline purposes. Am going to run the OLM to zero with various oils and...

GM OLM dropping fast in cold !

The OLM on my '97 Cadillac Deville loses 1% about every 100 miles on the highway in the summer (a 10,000 OCI pace). In the winter when there is below zero weather, with short trips, it will lose 1% in as little as 20 miles, a 2,000 mile OCI pace. My '06 Chevy Trailblazer will go up to 160 miles...

    Oil change centers RIP OFF

A friend of mine got tired of being told he needed a new air filter every time he went to a fast lube outlet. So he installed a new one immediately before going to have his oil changed. As usual, they told him he needed a new air filter. He replied, "that's funny, I just installed a new one...

    Insurance: OEM vs. Aftermarket

My beautiful Javelin was rear ended in 1975. I had a dispute with the other driver's insurance rep, who was not going to replace some items that were recommended by the body shop. He wanted to merely straighten them. I wrote to the state insurance commission, and he changed his tune very...

    Oil change centers RIP OFF

My posting was in response to the reply that seemed to indicate mechanics would be working for free if only the marginal increase in the cost of synthetic, including the cost of extra labor involved with bottled, rather than bulk, oil were added to the cost of the basic oil change. There is not...

    Mobil-1 Tri 10W30 Nissan 2000 1.8L 11,946 miles

New member cruising old UOAs. Noticed iron doubled and copper more than doubled between 3/28/02 change and 4/22/03 change. OCI only increased 32%. 10/20/03 change better, but still an increase in wear per mile vs shorter 8,274 mile interval for 3/28/02 change.

    Rental Car .....good times

I have read BITOG posts obsessively, and this is my first response. You did a good deed. Most customers wouldn't have checked the oil, let alone add any for free. Used oil is infinately preferable to low oil or no oil, especially when it will likely soon be changed. It is the rental companies...
