How much metal is still connected? From the picture not much. Looks like you can open it by hand.

Distorted pleats reduce filter surface area and holding capacity as seen in second picture. Here is a picture I upload for you to better understand. Notice how wider pleat can take in and hold more while tighter pleat is unable to hold any in?

It seems this Fram Endurance lost some of it's holding capacity with the pleats folding in on each other
