Validity of the "4-ball" wear test in engine lubes

I keep running across Amsoil related threads, and every so often the old "4-ball test results" Amsoil uses in their advertising resurfaces. I've been curious as to the validity of that test method, in regards to *engine* oils, and did an Internet search - found out others, including Mobil co...

    Amsoil 15W40 CJ4 vs Amsoil 15W40 CI4+

The question I have not seen covered, is exactly WHAT differences component-wise, between Amsoil's earlier plain CI4, and the later CI-4Plus? In the DELO 400 I use, the major difference is the addition of Moly and Boron in the CI-4Plus - what did Amsoil change between the 2 oils? And...

    Frantz as a fuel filter?

Here's a little info and pics of my Frantz fuel filter setup - I actually run 2 Frantz filters - one for oil, the other for diesel fuel in my '02 Dodge/Cummins truck. Filtration is the same as for oil. SUB-micron, but the restriction of this filter requires strict attention to the PSI and fuel...

    Motorguard or frantz mounting pics

SORRY to be late getting in here - but here's a few pics of my Frantz install - oil bypass on one side, fuel filter on the other: Closeup of the oil bypass, mounted to the '02 Dodge/Cummins battery hold-down bolt: The bracket for the fuel filter, showing construction - mount had to be...

What's the efficiency of TP element filters?

By all means, put the restrictor on the INPUT side of the bypass, so the filter canister is NOT exposed to the full engine oil PSI from the oil pump! Otherwise, great potential for oil leaks if a gasket or seal develops problems... I put mine right at the fitting the filter oil supply hose...

    B50 Particle Count Results!

Sorry to say - but the sample/particle count of mine further above was taken a bit out of context - I was basically doing a before/after test of a Fleetguard microglass filter vs an Amsoil Nanofiber filter. The base test, done with the Fleetguard I normally use was : The one displayed further...

Scored MASSIVE filter on ebay - cheap

Jeeze, that stock filter sure looks cheesy - you might also be able to stack TP rolls with the paper towel rolls to better fit the canister - I've also looked closely at these blue paper shop towels places like Kragen and others sell - they look pretty tightly wound, and appear to be a better...

    Lets talk toilet paper :)

Here's the analysis report from my '02 Dodge/Cummins with 20K miles on the Deko 400 oil - the engine was/is still seating in, so wear percentages are still higher than seen on a fully broken in engine. On my fully broken in '91 Dodge at 100K miles, Iron was typically 8PPM at 7K miles test...

    Coolant Bypass

????? are you actually filtering the engine coolent with the same type TP as normally used for oil? Also, what degree of contaminents are you seeing at filter changes, and how does whatever filter material you are using hold up?

    '02 Duramax Delo 400 15W40, Wix - 5,300/98,100

Those are the best non-Cummins, No-bypass wear numbers I've seen. Great report - and I sure love the addition of Molybdenum to the Delo - I'm expecting continued good reports from mine!

    Lets talk toilet paper :)

That's the theory - but even Frantz offers an upgrade that is to improve that center post seal - and I have made up one of my own...

    06 Dodge 5.9L Cummins w/5,050 mi on Delo 400 15w40

Here's my own 5000 mile report from blackstone, Frantz bypass, Delo 400 15/40: And here's the particle count for that same oil:

    Oil Analysis ?

I've used several different ones, but Blackstone has always provided consistent results combined with excellet service and related support info - they ARE a bit pricey - and if you want the whole analysis, TAN TBN and particle count, runs nearly $40!

    Lets talk toilet paper :)

I use the Scott stuff in my Frantz, and get great analysis #'s with Delo 400 in my '02 Cummins - but I really like some of the commercial grade stuff - obviously POOR for regular TP use, but the density sure seems great for use in these bypass setups. The stuff Frantz sells direct looks good...

Amsoil Bypass vs. Oil Guard Bypass

I'd sure like to see a particle count from a Amsoil bypass setup with about 5K miles on it to compare with what I got with my Frantz and Delo 400 at that mileage...
