In addition to pb reply, I top off when its easy to measure. In my Integra the halfway is 1/4 of a quart. In the explorer the halfway is half a quart. So I usually wait until the halfway mark.

Forgot to mention that I'm currently running M1 0w30 with 10k change intervals. @Shannow That is precisely why I was thinking of using it. Two oil changes ago I was running the oil formally known as GC. The engine was quieter but I'm guessing it was due to the oil being heavier than M1 0w30.
