Winter Tires for Severe Winter - Michelin X-Ice not Cutting it

They are predictable in snow. They are very unpredictable in ice, in lateral handling. They hold until they abruptly let go without any progressive loss of traction. It was known problem on that generation of Bridgestone winter tires that included WS80. WS90 was quick improvement over WS80...

Winter Tires for Severe Winter - Michelin X-Ice not Cutting it

DM-V2 have really tricky behavior in lateral ice handling. But if steep discount and, being aware of its limits, it is OK. WS90 is much better tire.

Winter Tires for Severe Winter - Michelin X-Ice not Cutting it

I checked DM-V2 and actually VC7 in Sequoia size is cheaper without discount and it is far better tire. DM-V2 is OK. For right price I would get it considering it is wearing out like butter on hot plate. It’s ice performance is not on par with VC7 or X-Ice Latitude I had before, but it is safe...

Winter Tires for Severe Winter - Michelin X-Ice not Cutting it

Heads up about Bridgestone Blzizak WS90 and DM-V2: They are on steep discount. I am actually thinking to buy it now for season 2027/28 for all vehicles.

Going from 508 to 504 on my VW Mk7 GLI

Yes, but that has been addressed since 1988, if my memory serves me well. No approved oil for any of the current VW approvals is catalytic converter damaging oil.

Going from 508 to 504 on my VW Mk7 GLI

BMW runs GPF on some models. Not sure why. It could be that taking them off is more costly than just running same line. Who knows.

Going from 508 to 504 on my VW Mk7 GLI

It is questionable how much lower SAPS help. There is more to it. Better base stocks are equally important, lower evaporation loss etc. In reality, only dual injection system works. VW knows that and in Europe they offer that. In the US, they are scamming customers, to their detriment, if you...

Going from 508 to 504 on my VW Mk7 GLI

DPF/GPF are targets for lower SAPS oils. Catalytic converters will be fine lower or higher SAPS.

Going from 508 to 504 on my VW Mk7 GLI

Primary reason for lower SAPS oils is not damaging catalytic converter, but DPF and now GPF. Sulfated Ash is byproduct. Oil can have high levels of Zinc and Phosphorus and still be lower SAPS. Mobil1 ESP 0W30 has Zinc levels on par current high SAPS oils. Your catalytic converter will be...

Going from 508 to 504 on my VW Mk7 GLI

As I said, there are parts of the world, including some EU countries where fuel quality is questionable. VW502.00 oils are for those markets. I know what are VW504.00 oils have to meet. I worked on their development.

Going from 508 to 504 on my VW Mk7 GLI

Again, VW updates VW 502.00 every time ACEA A3 is updated. It is absolutely irrelevant whether dealerships use it or not. Updating approvals is not tied to whether dealerships use it. There are parts of the world that still use full SAPS oils. I just got back from Germany two days ago, and world...

Going from 508 to 504 on my VW Mk7 GLI

That doesn’t explain it. There is far more to approval than just SAPS. I would not say it is that strict as Mobil 1 ESP 0W30 has SAPS levels above 0.8% by some measurements. There are more requirements for each of these approvals including deposit levels, evaporation loss and actual deposit...

Going from 508 to 504 on my VW Mk7 GLI

That is different from whether approval is outdated or not. Whether dealerships use VW502.00 or not is irrelevant to your original statement that approval is outdated.
