5,309 miles on the filter with Pennzoil Platinum High Mileage 5w30 oil.
Looks good, except for a few strands of sealant caught in the filter media but I can't be sure if it's from the filter or made it through the ADB valve from the engine.
The debris in the cutaway is from thinwheeling it...
Confirmed, no wire backing. The code on the can appears to be A40682, hopefully you guys know how to decode that? It was bought about a month and a half ago.
Ivan
It's sitting in the woodshed at my folks' shop, if it hasn't been disposed of when I go back next week I'll check for the date code.
Does the term "wire backed" mean there's metal in the filter element itself? Or a layer of mesh on the back of the element, basically between the element and the...
I'm sorry if it came across that way, it was certainly not my intention. I don't have a foot in either the Mobil 1 or Fram camp, just posting my experience from my most recent oil change. I'm not sure that posting two threads back-to-back would not have been read exactly the same way by those...
Both filters in the OP are made here in the U.S.A.
After this OCI I'm probably going back to the Fram, it's a few bucks cheaper than the M1 and seems to be a fine filter.

So I was in Wal-Mart to grab a filter and oil, and I noticed that this Mobil 1 M1-102A has a damaged bypass valve. Looks to be a quality control issue since it's unimaginable that this happened during shipping.
Anyway I also cut open my old Fram XG3614 to take a peek, everything looks good...
I was at Fleet Farm today with my penlight, I'm considering the Fram Ultra Synthetic as they look really nice from what I can see. More expensive at about $7.50 on RA but I'll take a slight price hit for quality. Haven't looked up any C&P yet on those.
I looked at the Tough Guard as well but...
I was able to remove some of the rust by lightly rubbing with my finger (hard to see but it's a slightly cleaner spot at about 7 o'clock on the cut-open picture, can take a vid when I get back to the shop).
Whether it would cause engine wear directly is certainly debatable since the rust is...
Thanks! It's a little messier in person but I used a rotary cutoff tool with a thinwheel to make all the cuts.
@FlyingVan and @cheesepuffs2 if I'd gotten them from Amazon or the 'Bay I'd suspect they were fakes with how poor they are compared to the last batch, but I think that RockAuto uses...
I looked up how to do the burn test, and the ADBV is in fact silicone if I'm understanding correctly. Took a while to light up, burns with a white smoke and white ash as pictured.
I noticed that it is very flimsy though, compared to the red ADBV of the U.S.-made filter. (Sorry that's the best...
So I take these replies as a hard YES to "send the remaining filters back and switch to a different brand". Will do! And no problem on sharing the C&P, I'm glad I did before deciding to run these on my van!
Ivan
Hello all, first post but I've been gleaning lots of info over the years from BITOG. Anyway, my latest order of filters from RockAuto is completely different from what I expect in Wix. So different that I'm debating whether I even want to use these or if I should send them right back.
First...
