Direct Injection = 5,000 mile / 6 month OCI as a smart oil regiment in mixed city & highway driving . I now drive less highways so I bump it back to 4,000 miles max for the next oil change .
I have found the newest M1 5W30 EP D1 / Gen 3 rated Synthetic oil to be surprisingly quiet in my otherwise noisy Hyundai Sonata - this could make for a good choice (don’t extend OCI beyond what your OM calls for).
Hypothetically , could the same engine (minus the turbo charger) be able to run the higher grade 5W40 with equal results in protection , usability , etc. ? In Hyundai / Kia engines - the turbo versions allow for the 5W40 option while the normally aspirated engines allow for 5W30 max .
I believe a key to potentially using is how has your engine been maintained , what type oil you use , what oil filter you use , what is your OCI and how well you maintain / change out your PCV ? … If you use a good name brand D1 / Gen 3 synthetic oil , Fram Ulter (or equivalent) oil filter , 5K...
I saw it at O’Reilly for $13.99 . Since I would only consider to use for adding to gas - I’d rather maintenance dose with Redline SL-1 for a similar price or TCW-3 for less price . Full dose would be a bottle of Techron or Gum Out so that doesn’t leave a slot for MMO Synthetic .
So , what does your 3.8L engine identify as ? What pronouns does it prefer ? … My 2.4L Theta II GDI engine identifies as an oil thrasher and oil diluter . Preferred pronouns are : It , They and Needs Oil Added .
While GF-6 , SP and D1 / Gen 3 rated oils are relatively new , what does the future hold for next generation oils with respect to improvements , refinements , etc. ?
