I suppose at this point we have to hope the total sludge clean-up in that area helped. Think a quart of HPL Engine Cleaner might give this area a better chance?

After the timing chain was replaced, the noise was still heard especially under load at low RPM. So, my son wanted to have a look under the valve covers. One rocker arm nut was a bit loose. He then started all over and hand tightened all of the nuts when the valve spring had zero tension and...

I suppose we should have removed that while we were in there. Would that have helped? We cleaned everything else reachable including behind the distributor gear. Suppose that should have come out at that time as well to clean in out better. We are amateurs after all. :unsure:

It was a concern for sure. We cleaned off all of the sludge and pushed a bottle brush up all the way into the valve cover; we thought that is where the oil is supposed to come from to oil the chain.

So, the truck is at about 15,000 miles since we got the beast. Some noise prompted a timing chain replacement. Here are the pictures. Chain was well past done and had a ton of slack.

M1 was dumped and Castrol 5w-30 Edge was added with a Fram XG filter.

So here is another chapter with a correction as the last Motorcraft filter change was at 132,500 miles. This oil/filter change is at 135k with about 2500 miles on the filter and 5000 on the Mobil 1 5w-30. Castrol 5w-30 Edge was added with a Fram XG filter. The Edge jugs cost us a little over $2...
