Yeah you can do that but the throttle not closing instantly gets in the way. I hardly ever used the clutch on my Datsuns and Triumphs except when taking off or stopping.
I tried that on the original transmission. Did not help much. That does not work so well on modern cars as the controls do not let the throttle plate close suddenly.
Do Tell. I will be rebuilding the original transmission. Upgrade P/N's? If nothing else is bad what else do I need for the job? Gaskets, sealant? I already have the input shaft seal and plan on ordering the output shafts seals. I do have the 5 gear removal tools.
