Using a thicker operating temperature oil?

Sounds like a plan, buy it in bulk and ride on! (y)🛵🏍️

Using a thicker operating temperature oil?

Somehow the above post became a double post. Editing that with this so it’s not as boring to read twice.

Using a thicker operating temperature oil?

My question would be why 5W50? You mention Australia, is extreme heat in the cards? I would run 10w40 or 15w40 in the scooter and be good to go. The XMax is liquid cooled and it’s not a shared sump. Should help maintain stable oil temps and resist shearing to some extent. Yes, 10w40 or 15w40.

Of course X-rings are favored now but the O-ring chain wasn’t sapping the life out of anything. When considering the difference, even if a high percentage, you could ride the same bike back to back with an O-ring chain versus an X-ring chain and not tell me which one you were on for a $50 bet...

    2020 Yamaha WR450 - 2 Samples

Copper and silver have come down from the first sample. Not knowing if that is typical of a dirt bike to have high break-in amounts of those I can’t comment if it’s bad but the trend is going in the right direction. Nickel is the cylinder plating. I get lower single-digit nickel in each...

I don’t envy the salt covered roads in the UK. Here in Colorado it’s not too bad so the needs definitely aren’t as particular.

    Triumph Tiger 1200 - 5.3K, 7.7K, and 10K analysis

I’m going to second the motion that if shift quality has truly not fallen off, I wouldn’t complain otherwise with the results you got. (y) The fact you have run T6 5w40 and know what shift quality falling off feels like, I am impressed that this oil despite ending up a low 30 weight didn’t...

    Triumph Tiger 1200 - 5.3K, 7.7K, and 10K analysis

The question based on the numbers is tee’d up like a softball, so I am going to hit it... Are you satisfied with the oil shearing out of grade to barely a 30 wt? I gather shift quality stays good, as that would seem to indicate shift quality going down with that amount of shear/reduction in...

That’s popular as a bicycle chain lube, first time I’ve heard it mentioned for cycles, but why not, should work. Green version is the more viscous vs the yellow. I have a small bottle of it in my tool kit on the mountain bike.

When I envision what you are describing, I see the lube getting inside the rollers and pins and supplanting the factory lube that the x/o rings are there to keep sealed in?

    Maxima Synthetic Chain Guard

First, are you running a sealed chain or regular roller chain? The lubes job is to keep the O-rings and the X rings protected which allows the original lubricant to stay inside of the rollers. Has nothing to do with chain sliding better on anything... Chainsaw bar oil will sure protect the...

Apologies I didn’t respond sooner. Yes the Honda HP Moly in the picture. As has been shared, Motul chain paste isn’t bad, keep a tube of that under my seat for emergency use on the road. Pretty good stuff as well. However it is not as low-fling as the Honda HP in my experience.

Honestly, no fling-off to speak of makes it the best to my mind.
