OK! All's well that ends well. Thanks largely to the inspiration of the OP, the wife is impressed and I am quite satisfied. "Works a treat" as they say.
Pretty much had to buy everything (switches, solder paste, solder wick (didn't use), solder sucker, etc) and found all but the soldering...
Legend has it Johnson Controls makes them (and WalMart's, too).
My experience is that they're crap. Any time it gets <40 F here at night, they die. Last night it got down to 37 F, and the battery that is less than a month old failed this morning. Again. I think this is our 4th in about 2...
Well, I sure found it inspiring enough to rip into my own. Now I can see just how microscopic those solder joints are. If you pulled this off, I'd say it's almost a superhuman feat.
