    Two HPL EC30 tests

Small update on my friend's CRV- He went ~1100 miles on the last quart he added- not dramatically different enough from the baseline average of 1 quart per 1K miles on 30 grade to draw any conclusions, but at least seems to not be trending in a bad direction since the start of these experiments...

2 Valvoline Restore & Protect tests

If you are worried, you can get a couple cheap filters, change them early, and cut them open for inspection to get an idea of how quickly deposits are being removed. The experiences shared in this thread by me and others and the fact that Valvoline seems to have been very conservative with the...

    Two HPL EC30 tests

I changed the filter before I disassembled anything to avoid that possibility. The little chunks in the filter are moderately hard, but they break down easily when rubbed between my fingers.

    Two HPL EC30 tests

Finally had a chance to work on the Legend. I fixed the worst of the leaks with new oil cooler O rings, a new oil pan gasket, and a new oil filter housing gasket, but I haven't been able to drive it due to salty roads. I did change the oil filter and cut the old one open though. Looks like...

    Two HPL EC30 tests

Unfortunately, I don't have any major updates. A new oil cooler seal kit took care of the worst of the Legend's leaks, but I haven't been able to drive it lately because all the roads are salty here and will be for at least the next couple of weeks and my only car that gets driven in salt is the...

    Two HPL EC30 tests

Haven't drove the Legend much in the last couple weeks because the oil leaks have gotten so bad I was adding a quart every 50-75 miles. It definitely did not leak like that before adding the EC30. Not sure if the EC30 uncovered leaks by cleaning, accelerated the degradation of the already old...

    Two HPL EC30 tests

Not really. The Legend is up to around 700 miles since adding EC30 and the lifter tick still hasn't been eliminated, but it ticks for significantly less time than it used to. I'm planning on pulling the front valve cover this weekend just to see how a reduction in lifter tick translates to...

Discount Tire no longer patches plugged tires

I wouldn't. Even if the plug itself doesn't cause a failure, a plugged tire was very likely run low on air from the leak and may have been damaged from the underinflation.

As I said several times, I have no way to know for sure since he's not interested in tearing the engine down at this time. Stuck rings are almost always what causes excessive oil consumption on the K series and it's a common enough issue that Honda issued a warranty extension, but of course...

2 Valvoline Restore & Protect tests

Great point, that's yet another potential variable on my friend's CRV. Might be worth doing a compression test and leakdown test to get somewhat of an idea of whether that might have happened. At idle, the blow by seems normal for a K24 and the engine runs pretty well, but a compression test...

2 Valvoline Restore & Protect tests

The Motor Oil Geek recently released this video showing that R&P seemingly did a great job of cleaning his engine after only one 5K mile OCI. Assuming his results are legit and the cleaning he saw on his dipstick translates to the rest of the engine, that really goes to show how important a...

    Two HPL EC30 tests

About 400 miles in, there has been a definite improvement in the Legend's lifter tick. It hasn't been eliminated yet, but it doesn't tick for nearly as long as it used to. When I drove it this morning, it was done ticking by the time I was out of my neighborhood (about 1/4 mile), which is a...

2 Valvoline Restore & Protect tests

I don't think thinning out the oil for a 15 minute flush at idle is much of an issue. Lots of people are running around with plenty of fuel dilution with no immediate adverse effects. Most flushes are mostly kerosene or diesel, so I don't see how roughly a half quart of that would be worse than...

2 Valvoline Restore & Protect tests

It's hard to say which oils do or don't reduce piston deposits since they aren't easy to inspect. Oil consumption can be an indication, but there's still too many other variables to say for sure, especially on a car with unknown history. Yes, a longer term test would be ideal, but as I said...

2 Valvoline Restore & Protect tests

If it's that slow (and it seems like it may be), it may not be very useful to many people for its cleaning properties since people tend to consider products like that after they have a lifter tick or some other issue they are trying to resolve. If someone uses it for a few oil changes, sees zero...
