Coasting to a stop vs down shifting to a stop in manual transmissions

Exactly my thoughts as well. I engine brake every time I slow down on all 3 of my manual cars (two Civics and an Acura Legend) and it doesn't seem to affect my oil consumption at all. My worst oil burner (the 05 Civic) burns about a quart every 6K miles whether I engine brake or not. I don't...

Coasting to a stop vs down shifting to a stop in manual transmissions

Coasting is technically illegal in many states including the state I live in, but I have never heard of that law being enforced and I don't see how it possibly could be. And yes, some amount of coasting is required no matter how you drive. Think about it, you coast for a second every time you...

    Honda Civic Type R FK8; Honda Engine Type 2.0 0W20; 9307 Km / 5783 mi

A thicker oil will flow through the turbocharger slower and therefore remove less heat, but I doubt a 0W-40 would cause undesirable effects. Correct me if I'm wrong, but in Europe, I believe the Type R calls for 0W-20 or 5W-30, correct? Since you said you only drive it in the summer and on a...

When does a car “age out” for long distance road trips?

Agreed. In general, driving any given distance continuously at a fairly steady speed is going to be much easier on the vehicle as a whole and LESS likely to cause a failure than driving the same distance in traffic over many start/stop cycles and heat cycles. There are certainly exceptions...

When does a car “age out” for long distance road trips?

I personally don't have an age or mileage limit. As other said, it depends on its condition, how well it was maintained, how well it's reliability (or lack thereof) has been proven both to both the owner and generally for that particular model, etc. Another important factor that I haven't seen...

    Amsoil SS 5W-20 6251 miles 05 Honda Civic 1.7

Not to start yet another thick vs thin thread, but that should work fine. According to owners manuals for Japan and Europe, 5W-40 is suitable for use in all temperature ranges. That said, it obviously wouldn't be ideal for frequent shorter trips where the oil is going to be below operating temp...

    Amsoil SS 5W-20 6251 miles 05 Honda Civic 1.7

That seems like as good of a guess as any considering the lack of other bearing metals on the oil sample. I have no way to know the total mileage on the engine, likely somewhere around 100K assuming I got it with 50K miles since I put about another 50K on it. JDM engines are definitely hit or...

    Amsoil SS 5W-20 6251 miles 05 Honda Civic 1.7

The engine is definitely not still in break in, it's been in use since I got it in 2018. It has been apart near the end of 2022 when I changed the timing belt and some oil seals, which could explain the silicon.

    Amsoil SS 5W-20 6251 miles 05 Honda Civic 1.7

Thanks for sharing! Before I installed this engine, I pulled the oil pan and checked a couple of the rod bearings and they looked very good-almost new. Also changed the head gasket and valve stem seals and gave everything a good cleaning. As of about a year ago, the compression in all 4...

    Amsoil SS 5W-20 6251 miles 05 Honda Civic 1.7

A couple things I forgot to mention: 1. That engine has a large stainless steel oil to coolant heat exchanger, which I believe is brazed together with copper. I installed it about 4 years ago and thoroughly flushed it before installation, but is it possible that it's still shedding copper ions...

    Amsoil SS 5W-20 6251 miles 05 Honda Civic 1.7

Good idea, I may try that. Xw-40 oils are approved for that engine in other markets, so it certainly won't hurt to try it. As I said, I don't know the mileage on this engine since I bought it used from a JDM engine importer back in 2018, but it's likely quite a bit lower than the car.

    Amsoil SS 5W-20 6251 miles 05 Honda Civic 1.7

Hello all, this is my first time doing a UOA and I decided to start with my part time daily driver 2005 Honda Civic with the 1.7L VTEC engine and 5 speed manual transmission. I'm not sure of the mileage on the engine since it is a replacement from Japan, but the Amsoil Signature Series 5W-20 and...

AC dryer now a maintenance item?

I was just about to say that. No one even thinks about changing the dryer in their refrigerator or central AC unit and they are normally brazed in with no way to easily replace them, yet they still almost always last for the life of the system. And although contamination may be more of a...

AC dryer now a maintenance item?

From my understanding, in the case of EV's, the AC system is often used for helping to cool and sometimes heat the battery and possibly other components such as inverters and motors. So since the performance of the AC system is important to the functionality of EV's, the manufacturer likely...

AC dryer now a maintenance item?

That's debatable IMO because any time the system is serviced is a potential opportunity for contamination, undercharging, overcharging, over oiling, under oiling, defective parts, broken nuts/bolts, etc for questionable at best improvements. But if we are going to go with that procedure, may as...

AC dryer now a maintenance item?

I agree that moisture shouldn't get in unless the system has a leak or was opened in some way, but if a car manufacturer wanted to require unnecessary services just as a scam to increase profits, I don't see why they would pick something so strange and illogical while going out of their way to...

AC dryer now a maintenance item?

Good to know. I have a 1997 Civic with 354K southern miles on its original R134a AC system and it still works perfectly, so it seems like its dryer has held up alright too.

AC dryer now a maintenance item?

Not sure, but this is the first time I'm hearing of it. I've only replaced them when the system had to be opened and never even considered replacing them preventatively. Yes, one of the dryer's functions is to filter any small particles out of the refrigerant and oil, but since the AC system is...

AC dryer now a maintenance item?

What's up with AC accumulator/receiver dryers now apparently being a maintenance item? Now we have Tesla requiring a replacement every 2-6 years depending on the model, GM requiring a replacement every 7 years on at least one model (the Traverse), Delphi recommending a replacement every 2 years...

    2005 Acura TSX with 272k miles - 9k interval - Pennzoil Platinum Euro L 5W30

As others said, your options are pretty much to run it until it blows up, starts knocking, etc or pull the oil pan or entire engine and disassemble for inspection. The K24A2 is an engine I have experience with since I fully disassembled and rebuilt one before swapping it into my Civic back in...
