A lighter aviation story found on Facebook:

A trip on the Martin M-130 China Clipper in 1936 included five stops from San Francisco to Hong Kong: Honolulu; Midway Island; Wake Island; Guam; and Manila, Philippines. Passenger counts on the San Francisco-Honolulu leg rarely exceeded six or seven. With any more, luggage had to be sent by ship. Twelve passengers were the maximum. The length of the San Francisco-Honolulu flight-eighteen to twenty-two hours depending on winds-required.

This would have been a Pan Am schedule and the Martins were soon replaced with larger and more capable Boeing Model 314.
An interesting read about Pan Am's pre-war development and their deployment of flying boats can be found in this book:
Stranded in the sky : the untold story of Pan Am luxury airliners trapped on the day of infamy
