I have a very nice 1996 dodge ram, 3500 Dually with the manual five speed NV 4500.
The Dilemma is… That I have Mopar oil for it but it expiration date was in 2009.
I am thinking since it's manufacture date is so old and oil technology has surpassed since then. Thinking I should use something else. In that case, What is the best quality oil should I use in today's oil market

That's the old Mopar Castrol Syntorq 75W85, not sure if it is available any more or not? I'm a big fan of Red Line MT-90 & MT-85 (which is 75W85)-but IIRC the GM NV4500 lube is still available, PN 12346190. I'm not sure MTF has made huge advances since the '90s.

Call Dave at Redline he'll know for sure what's best for your transmission. Redline tech line (707) 745-6100

That is the correct part number for the NV4500. Ignore the expiration date and use it. It looks like 9/10/05 was the manufacture date. Expiring after 4 years in the bottle is ridiculous. I changed my 97 Chevy 2500 HD at about 5 years and 50k miles with the GM equivalent. Eighteen years and another 50k miles later it was still shifting like new. My wife sold the truck, but if I get it back I've got GM fluid purchased in 2002 going in.

The NV 4500 takes very specific MTF fluid. Castrol Syntorq LT, no longer made, sold under the Mopar and GM part #'s. Red Line MT-85, 75W85, SKU#90020 is the replacement if you can't get the GM or Mopar part number fluid. Last I checked, Amsoil does not make a MTF that meets NV4500 spec. There were very specific requirements for this fluid and it has not been improved upon. What you have is the best there is.

FWIW, these transmissions were bulletproof in the HD gas engine trucks. There were occasional problems with the high torque applications with diesels.

It looks like AMSOILs website lists their 75w-90 manual transmission fluid as being compatible with the nv4500.

I have a 95 with nv4500, last change I used the gm fluid I believe the 12346190. It looks like it is no longer made, my next change will probably be the AMSOIL.

Good catch. That is listed as a specific replacement for the GM P/N 12346190.

AMSOIL Manual Syncromesh Transmission Fluid is speced for the NV3500. It will not work in the NV4500. For very long, anyways.
